Innovation in Education Fund

About the Caltech Innovation in Education Fund

The Innovation in Education Fund is designed to support Caltech faculty developing new courses, implementing innovative and evidence-based teaching methods, upgrading educational facilities, or pursuing other new academic activities.
Innovation in Education projects may improve undergraduate and/or graduate instruction.
The Fund is not designed to sustain ongoing programs.
The Provost's office encourages new proposals that will have an impact on the undergraduate curriculum, teaching, and learning—in the Core Curriculum and otherwise.
In addition, proposals related to sustainability are especially welcome, with sustainability in Caltech education broadly construed to include courses, modules, experiments, cases, or other innovations that allow students to engage with challenges and opportunities associated with climate change and the stewardship of natural resources.

Proposal Process:

Proposals for smaller projects (under $5,000) are accepted and funded on a rolling basis.
Proposals for larger projects for the upcoming academic year should be submitted near the beginning of July for consideration by the fall term. (The deadline is typically the second Friday of July - Friday, July 11 for the 2025-2026 academic year.)
In proposals, please include a brief description of the proposed activity, anticipated outcomes for students, and a budget.
Innovation in Education projects typically include some amount of cost sharing with the division so it is helpful if you can speak with your division chair before submitting, though not required.
