Improve and deepen your skills (career paths)

At Chalmers, employees can improve and deepen their skills in several ways. We offer a range of skills development activities such as training and seminars.

Science communication

Science communication is crucial for increasing understanding, trust, and engagement with research among the public and our policymakers, while also promoting openness and inclusivity in the scientific process.

To facilitate researchers at Chalmers in reaching beyond academia with their research, the Communications Department has developed the educational concept "Chalmers Communications Academy." Here, we offer courses designed to empower our staff in navigating the modern communication landscape. In the courses we cover topics such as the fundamentals of science communication, including messaging, target audiences, channels and social media such as LinkedIn.

Doctoral student

We believe that a key factor for success in your role as a doctoral student is to feel secure in your everyday life. This is one of the reasons why we employ all our doctoral students. There are clear salary levels and they are revised every year. We also offer a range of courses for doctoral students as part of our Generic and Transferable Skills (GTS) initiative.

Researchers and teachers

Chalmers is owned by a foundation, which gives us a different degree of freedom from state universities in Sweden. At Chalmers, there are two different career paths for academic staff. One is the traditional one; doctoral student, assistant professor, associate professor, professor and full professor. If you are employed in one of these positions, you are expected to take responsibility for Chalmers as a whole and contribute to research, education and utilisation.

The other academic track is the specialist track. This is mainly aimed at those who are mostly externally funded and want to spend most of their working hours on research and utilisation.

Appointment regulation for teaching and research staff C 2025-1767

Rules of Procedure C 2024-0892

As of 1 January 2026, Chalmers University of Technology has a new Appointment Regulation (C 2025-1767) that describes the academic positions at Chalmers and the qualifications and duties that apply to them.\ During a transitional period, the previous Rules of Procedure will also apply, but only for processes where new routines are not yet in place. The Rules of Procedure do not regulate appointments. The information is updated continuously.

Technical/administrative staff

We have a wide range of technical and administrative staff with several career opportunities. As an employer, we strive to promote internal mobility for our staff. We also have opportunities for skills development, Erasmus exchanges and more.
