## Do I have to pay tuition fees?
### No tuition fees for EU/EEA citizens
Higher education in Sweden is free for citizens within the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland.
Education is also free if you have been granted permanent Swedish residency or have been granted temporary Swedish residency for reasons other than studies.
More information is found at [Who is required to pay fees?](https://www.universityadmissions.se/en/fees-scholarships-residence-permit/who-is-required-to-pay-fees/ "Who is required to pay fees?")
### I will apply for an extension of my residence permit for purposes other than studies
Your current residence permit determines when it is time to apply for an extension.
[The Swedish Migration Agency has more information](https://www.migrationsverket.se/en/you-want-to-extend.html "Swedish Migration Agency")
### Tuition fees for non-EU/EEA citizens
If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland, you are required to pay tuition fees for higher education in Sweden.
If you are required to pay tuition fees, it is important that you do so as soon as possible after receiving the invoice. You must pay before applying for a residence permit and, since that process takes several months, it is important to start right away.
### No tuition fees for exchange students
Incoming exchange students are exempted from tuition fees in accordance with their agreements.

## Payment of tuition fees
If you are liable to pay tuition fees for studies at Chalmers, you will receive an email with information on where to access the invoice via the email you provided when you applied. The email with payment information will be sent shortly after the admissions results (Notification of Selection Results from universityadmissions.se) are announced. The last day to pay is stated on the invoice and the amount due will be set out in SEK (Swedish Krona).
The email contains necessary login details such as your customer number and the web link to Chalmers' Pay Portal. When you log into your account at Chalmers’ [Pay Portal](https://pay.portal.chalmers.se/), you have access to your invoices at any time. Pay Portal also contains information on how to pay by card and wire transfer from both Sweden and abroad.\

Admission to our education programs is based solely on merit and is never influenced by nationality or other factors. However, due to international regulations, Swedish universities are currently prohibited from conducting monetary transactions with Belarus, Iran, and Russia. If you are a citizen of a country subject to international sanctions, please be aware of this restriction when deciding to accept your admission and pay the tuition fee.\
