Approved leave of absence from studies

Leave of absence is granted by the university for a full term or a maximum of one year, with a guaranteed place on the programme. Applications must be submitted no later than three weeks after the start of the term. If you wish to apply for a leave of absence longer than one year, your return to studies will be subject to availability in the programme.

When you return to your studies, you will continue according to your original programme plan, provided that no changes have been made to the programme and that you meet the prerequisites for the upcoming courses.

Contact your student guidance counsellor to discuss how a leave of absence may affect your studies. This is particularly important if you are taking a leave of absence for a term or if you are behind in your studies, as courses are usually only offered once per academic year and most have prerequisite requirements that must be met.

Residence Permit

If you hold a residence permit for studies, ask the Swedish Migration Agency which rules apply when taking a leave of absence from your studies.

Tuition fees

If you are a tuition-fee paying student and are granted leave of absence from studies, it is important that you forward the decision to tuitionfees@chalmers.se. Otherwise, you will be invoiced for the upcoming term. A leave of absence may only be granted for approved academic or personal reasons, not due to financial circumstances.
