Admission with a Degree from another national or international University

Source: https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/admission/admission-to-a-doctoral-programme/inter-national-masters-degree Parent: https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/admission/admission-to-a-doctoral-programme/pre-registration

For admission with a master's degree from another national or international post-secondary educational institution (university, university of applied sciences, etc.) an application with the Admission Office is necessary, as the equivalence to the relevant master's programme offered at TU Wien has to be evaluated by the respective dean of studies.

Certain master's or diploma programmes from Austrian universities of applied science are equivalent based on ordinances issued by the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Research and allow for direct admission without prior evaluation of equivalence. When there is no complete equivalence, the ordinance stipulates that the doctoral programme will be extended by 1 or 2 semesters to match with a university master's programme.

Necessary documents

Please submit the following documents via post or in person at the Admission Office:

Applications sent in electronically will not be considered.

Please note that because of repeated customs payment demands, mail sent via express shipment companies from a non-EU/EEA country may not be accepted by the admission office! Please also refrain from giving our e-mail address to the courier services as we have no use for shipment updates.

NOTE!\ Documents issued in countries other than Austria are subject to legalisation regulations. All documents that are not originally issued in German or English must also be officially translated and remain inseparably attached to the original document. Always have translations carried out after any (diplomatic) certification. This is because domestic certification marks (stamps, seals, etc.) must also be translated if they are not in German or English.

For administrative reasons a maximum of 2 applications for admission per person are allowed!

When shall I submit my documents?

Personal enrolment with a letter of admission is possible until December 10th (winter semester) or until June 10th (summer semester).\ A complete overview of the admission periods can be found in the Academic Calender. \ \ Therefore, please send the documents in good time!\ Due to the high number of applications, processing may take 10-12 weeks. Please understand that the Admissions Office cannot provide any information (neither by phone nor by email) about the processing status of your application before this processing time has expired.

In order to obtain admission for the semester applied for we recommend submitting complete applications within the following periods:

If missing documents are not submitted within this date, the application can only be assessed for the following semester, without exception.

Processing the Application

Verification of the submitted documents by the Admission Office

After receiving your application, the Admission Office is verifying the existence and authenticity of the documents. If there are any formal irregularities in the documents the Admission Office will inform you by post or e-mail.

If missing documents, translations etc. are not sent within the set deadlines, the application will be rejected and admission at TU Wien is not possible. Therefore, follow the instructions of the Admission Office carefully!

Verification of the academic background by the Dean of Academic Affairs

Once the documents are complete and have been reviewed by the Admission Office, the application will be forwarded to the relevant Dean of Academic Affairs for review of the academic background.

If the Dean of Academic Affairs requires further information or documents from you, they will contact you by e-mail.

If the completed studies largely corresponds to the relevant master's programme at TU Wien, admission to the doctoral programme may be granted. If differences in subject matter are identified, admission will be granted with conditions (= additional courses from the master's programme), which must be completed as supplementary examinations during the doctoral programme.

If the identified differences in subject matter amount to more than 30 ECTS credits, admission is unfortunately not possible.

Prescribed supplementary examinations like German must be passed prior to admission as degree student and can be completed at the University Preparation Programme ("Vorstudienlehrgang der Wiener Universitäten - VWU"). Therefore, you will get enrolled as non-degree-student. You have to pay the course fee.

NOTE! \ Applicants, who have to pass the supplementary examination German, have to watch additionally the deadlines for course-registration to the University Preparation Programme! Read the relevant information on the Homepage of the University Preparation Programme very carefully!

Issuance of the Admission Letter

After completion of the evaluation by the respective Dean of Academic Affairs and when the equivalence has been determined, the letter of admission will be issued and sent via post mail. You will also be notified by post mail if the admission is not possible.
