# Admission procedure for non-degree and continuing education university programme students

**Parent**: https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/admission
There are two possibilities to be admitted at the university: either as a degree student in a bachelor, master or doctoral programme or as a non-degree student.
**Non-degree students** are students who are:
- attending a continuing education university programme ("Universitätslehrgang"; not a regular degree programme, but a [university course](https://www.tuwien.at/en/ace/programs/university-courses) at the [TU Wien Academy](https://www.tuwien.at/en/ace))
- attending the University Preparation Programme (i.e. German course for students who have to take C1 German examination);
- attending individual courses;
- preparing for the [University entrance qualification exam](https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/admission/studying-without-secondary-school-leaving-certificate) ("Studienberechtigungsprüfung");
- pursuing [nostrification](https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/admission/nostrification-and-appraisal) of a degree obtained abroad (enrolment required in cases where supplementary examinations are necessary).
If you are a non-Austrian citizen, you should bear in mind that as a non-degree programme student you do not get a student residence permit (inquire about the visa regulations at the Austrian embassy/consulate in your country) and that you cannot get an insurance in Austria. Insurance is obligatory for everyone who lives in Austria. The interim status as non-degree programme student while attending the University Preparation Programme (i.e. 'German course') is a different legal matter, as the applicant is already officially accepted at the university.
## FAQ
### What do I have to consider as a non-degree student?
If you only wish to **attend certain courses** at TU Wien without completing a degree programme, you have the option of attending these courses as a non-degree student. However, it is not possible to complete an entire degree programme or to take "Rigorosum" or (partial) diploma examinations!
### How to apply for admission as a non-degree programme student to attend individual courses?
The admission procedure for non-degree students is similar to the admission procedure for degree students.
You have to complete the [pre-registration](https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/admission/admission-as-a-non-degree-student/pre-registration#c26857) via the ‘NON-DEGREE PROGRAMME’ tile and come to the Admission Office within the [admission period](https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/admission/academic-calendar) for personal enrolment.
To bring along:
1. valid travel document (**passport**, ID card)
2. ONLY for **students of IST** (Institute of Science and Technology - Austria): **Confirmation of enrolment** for the current semester
### How to apply for admission as a non-degree programme student for the University Preparation Programme?
If you have received a letter of admission on the basis of an [application for admission](https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/admission) to a regular bachelor or master programme in which supplementary examinations were prescribed, you can take these examinations at the university course "Vorstudienlehrgang der Wiener Universitäten - VWU" (University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities) set up for this purpose, where the corresponding courses are attended before the examination.
You will first be admitted as an non-degree student. You do not need to submit a separate application for this, but you must complete the relevant [pre-registration](https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/admission/admission-as-a-non-degree-student/pre-registration) via the ‘NON-DEGREE PROGRAMME’ tile and then come to the Admissions Office with the following documents for personal enrolment:
- admission letter,
- registration and payment confirmation of the VWU
- admission code (from the pre-registration),
- valid travel document (passport or ID card)
- non-EU/EEA-citizens only: valid residence permit, if available.
As soon as you are admitted as a non-degree student to take the supplementary examination(s) at the TU Wien, you have to take the supplementary examination exclusively within the framework of the VWU and prove this by means of the corresponding positive certificate of the supplementary examination. After admission as an non-degree student for the VWU other certificates are no longer accepted!
All information on the preparation programme (registration, costs, deadlines, etc.) can be found on the [homepage of the VWU](https://vorstudienlehrgang.oead.at/en/vienna).
### Do I have to pay a tuition fee?
Yes, you must pay the [students' union fee](https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/admission/students-union-fee-and-tuition-fee/oeh-fee-students-union-fee) and [tuition fee](https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/admission/students-union-fee-and-tuition-fee/tuition-fee#c842942), regardless of your nationality.
