# TUcard (student ID card)

The **student identity card (TU card) in chip card format** identifies you as a student and thus as a member of TU Wien and serves as a photo ID for identity checks during examinations and in all facilities of TU Wien. The student ID card will accompany you throughout your entire period of study! The TUcard also serves as an official photo ID. However—like a driver’s license—it is not recognised by all authorities as sufficient proof of identity (for example, the TUcard does not indicate the holder’s nationality).
## Where do I get the TUcard?
The TUcard is issued by the Admission Office during the personal enrollment for the chosen degree programme. Because the TUcard is an identity card you have to upload a photo during the [online registration](https://tiss.tuwien.ac.at/aufnahme/aufnahmeverfahren?locale=en). Please note that **there is no possibility to upload a photo at the Admissions Office**! It is therefore recommended to complete the online registration from a personal computer in order to be able to upload the desired photo for the student card without any problems.
## How long is the TUcard valid for?
The **validity date** of the ID card is on the **back**. If you have been duly admitted and have [reported the continuation](https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/admission/students-union-fee-and-tuition-fee/continuation-of-studies) of your studies to each semester during the admission period by paying the Students’ Union fee and/or tuition fee, the ID card will be valid until **October 31st for the summer semester** and until **March 31st for the winter semester**.
## How do I extend the validity date of my TUcard?
The **extension of the validity date** is possible after [reporting the continuation](https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/admission/students-union-fee-and-tuition-fee/continuation-of-studies) during the admission period **by yourself** at the designated terminals ([TUcard kiosks](https://www.tuwien.at/fileadmin/Assets/dienstleister/studienabteilung/Lageplan_TUcard_Kioske_A4_05_02_2019_-_englisch.pdf)) at different locations.
## I need a new TUcard. What shall I do?
### Step one: Deactivate your TUcard
First you have to block your TUcard in your student account. Log in to TISS and deactivate your TUcard under the tab "Organisation" in the menu item "TUcard". Then follow the further instructions in TISS.
For the new TUcard you have to upload a photo and pay a card replacement fee of 15 Euro.
### Step two: Notice of loss or theft
The TUCard serves as official photo ID. Therefore, you have to report the loss to the Magistrat or the theft to the police. A confirmation of this report must be presented at the Admission Office.
### Step three: Admission Office
If you have successfully ordered a new TUcard, come with an official ID card (e.g. driver's licence, passport) and the notice of loss or theft to the Admissions Office during [opening hours](https://www.tuwien.at/en/tu-wien/organisation/central-divisions/admission-office). There you'll receive your new TUcard.
If you need a new TUcard because of name changes or data error, the old card is to be handed in.
