Research at TU Wien - From Basic Research to Applications

Research at TU Wien is focused on five key areas. These five pillars represent strengths and skills of TU Wien going back many years, and they strengthen its profile in international competition. Within these key areas, work is carried out on an inter-disciplinary basis and the research spectrum is being constantly developed. The ‘additional fields’ provide further, equally important areas for research. All research activities are organised into the research matrix.

With its eight faculties (50 institutes and about 4.000 researchers) the TU Wien covers the whole value added chain within the classical engineering and natural science fields - basic as well as applied research projects provide newest findings and innovations.

Vice Rector Research, Innovation, International Affairs

The Vice Rector Research, Innovation, International Affairs coordinates the research agenda of TU Wien and directs the strategic development of research at the university.

Responsibilities:

The Vice Rector has to be involved in all high value and interdisciplinary research projects and investments (see guidelines), manages the research budget and coordinates internal research funding.

Research

The sector 'Research' is responsible for the strategic management, support and further development of all research activities at TU Wien - from basic research to applied research - and thus contributes significantly to the international positioning and scientific success of the university.\ The ‚Funding support and industry relations - FöWi‘ (‘Förderberatung und Wirtschaftskooperationen’) is a TUW support unit that actively intensifies the exchange of knowledge between science and industry in order to stimulate new collaborations and that functions as an interface between TUW researchers, funding organisations, companies and others.

Innovation

The sector 'Innovation' of the Vice-Rectorate for Research, Innovation and International Affairs at TU Wien supports and coordinates all activities aimed at transferring innovative research results into practice, promoting cooperation, networking researchers and increasing the visibility and economic benefits of TU Wien research.\ Another declared strategic goal of TU Wien is to position itself as an innovative university with a strong number of spin-offs in European competition, in which a strong focus is also placed on dedicating technical innovations to social benefit. Spinoff Factory GmbH, the coordination office responsible for the innovation strategy, the programme for promoting spin-offs and managing TU investments, as well as partnerships with universities and companies in Austria and Europe, also serve this purpose.

International Affairs

The Department of International Relations and Global Affairs is the central point of contact for international relations, mobility and cooperation at TU Wien. It accompanies students, researchers and employees on their way abroad and welcomes international guests to the university. As a bridge between people, institutions and cultures, it strengthens the international orientation of TU Wien and creates space for sustainable cooperation and lived internationality in everyday university life.\

TU Wien is part of several research networks - conducting basic research and applied technology.

Research Support
