# Technische Chemie (Technical Chemistry)

In the Bachelor's Programme “Technische Chemie” (hereafter: Technical Chemistry), you acquire fundamental knowledge of chemistry, practical skills for working in a chemical laboratory, an understanding of the implementation of chemical processes on an industrial scale and the related regulatory and operational frameworks, as well as general scientific and technical knowledge and skills that can be applied beyond the field of chemistry.

The programme covers the following subject areas:

- **Scientific foundations** (Mathematics, Physics)
- **Fundamentals of chemistry** (Principles of Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Solid-State Chemistry, Biochemistry)
- **Chemical technologies** (Chemical Technology of Organic Substances, Chemical Technology of Inorganic Substances, Biotechnology, Technical Electrochemistry)
- **Process engineering** (Chemical, Thermal, and Mechanical Process Engineering)

## Programme-PRe-Phase

There is no selection procedure for the Bachelor's degree programme in Technical Chemistry. Instead, before being admitted, you must engage with the contents of the programme as part of the so-called [Study Preparation and Reflection Phase](https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/studies/bachelor-programmes/technical-chemistry/programme-pre-phase) (Programme-PRe-Phase).

## Self-Assessment

The self-assessment is a mandatory component of the Programme-PRe-Phase. You may also complete the [self-assessment](https://studienwahl.tuwien.ac.at/index.htm) independently of the Programme-PRe-Phase (e.g., beforehand) for the purpose of self-reflection. After completing the self-assessment, you will receive an enrolment code. If you decide to apply for the selected degree programme, you do not need to complete the assessment again; you only need to upload the enrolment code you received within your Programme-PRe-Phase.

## Further Information

### Which skills are needed for academic success?

You should be interested in and enjoy the production and characterisation of substances and materials, as well as experimental work. Although manual dexterity, computer skills and foreign language skills are of advantage, they are not required from the outset. A three-day orientation course for new students, including two full days in the laboratory, will be offered starting on 1 October.

### What can I do with my degree?

Graduates are acquainted with practical work in chemical laboratories, as well as with the underlying theoretical principles and fundamental chemical concepts. They have mastered the technical terminology and are familiar with important methods used in this field. They understand the fundamental properties that characterise matter and how it can be transformed. They can develop, apply and evaluate methods for synthesising and characterising substances, and understand how to specifically influence chemical reactions and equilibria.

There are currently just under 4,000 chemists employed in Austria. This number increases by 2 to 3% every year. Unemployment rates are very low. Around half of our graduates work in application-oriented professions, a quarter in science (research and development), and the remaining quarter in multidisciplinary roles requiring additional relevant knowledge alongside chemistry. Therefore, good career opportunities exist not only in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, but also in metalworking, ceramics, energy, the environment, and the public sector, including government agencies and offices.
