# Competence in English

The admission to a Master's degree program **taught in English** language at TU Wien, requires the knowledge of the English language at least at **level B2 CEFR**.

The following certificates are accepted for an unlimited time as evidence of proficiency in English:

- **Successfully passed High school leaving certificate with subject English** at a recognised educational institution
  - in EU/EEA area, Switzerland or
  - in UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand\
    as long as the level B2 is provided
  - as part of the IB-Diploma (grade 5 and above)
- **Completed an at least three-year degree programme with English as the language of instruction** at a recognised post-secondary educational institution
  - in EU/EEA area, Switzerland
  - in UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand

Following English certificates are valid for two years from the date of issue:

- **Cambridge C1 Advanced** (CAE) at least 160 points
- **Cambridge B2 First** (FCE) from grade C (at least 160 points)
- **TOEFL iBT** or **iBT Home Edition** at least 87 points (or 4.5 points as per the new scale valid since 21/1/26)
- **IELTS** **Academic** or **Academic Online** overall band score at least 6.5 points
- Language Competency Examination (minimum level B2) by a **Language Center of a university**
  - in EU/EEA area, Switzerland
  - in UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand

### I have no knowledge of English or no B2 certificate. Can I still apply?

In this case you **cannot apply for admission** at TU Wien. Submitting an application only makes sense if you can provide one of the above-mentioned B2 certificates.

### I have a B2 level in English, but none of the above. Can I still apply?

In this case you **cannot apply for admission** at TU Wien. Submitting an application only makes sense if you can provide one of the above-mentioned B2 certificates.

### My degree programme was taught in English, but not in one of the above-mentioned countries. Is it still accepted as proof of language proficiency?

No. Confirmations of English as the language of instruction will only be accepted from post-secondary educational institutions within the EU/EEA, Switzerland, UK, USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

### I am a British/American/etc. citizen, is this sufficient proof of English proficiency?

No. The nationality is not sufficient proof of language competence. Please provide one of the above mentioned documentations.

### I would like to apply for an German-taught master's programme. Do I need a proof of English language proficiency (B2)?

No. In this case you only need a proof of [German language proficiency](https://www.tuwien.at/en/studies/admission/masters-programmes/other-inter-national-bachelors-degree/competence-in-german) at least at the level A2 or C1 CEFR.

### I want to apply for a doctoral programme. Do I need proof of English language proficiency?

No. For applications for admission to a doctoral programme proof of language proficiency is generally not necessary.
