Need to take a break from your studies?

Students have the possibility to have a break in their studies at TU Wien for a short period of time (max. 6 semesters in total) without losing their admission to study at TU Wien by requesting academic leave.

Application and deadline

The application must be submitted

for the summer semester for which the academic leave is to apply, completed in full (with signature), together with the required proof and a copy of the student ID, via Jira to the Admissions Office.

NOTE: The academic leave is only possible if no exams have been taken and no academic papers have been submitted in the semester for which the academic leave is requested!

ÖH fee: Yes - tuition fee: No

You do not have to pay tuition fees during an academic leave. The ÖH-fee has to be paid. Otherwise, the academic leave is not valid and your admission expires.

Academic Leave with retroactive Effect

Since an academic leave has an effect on the future, approval cannot be granted retroactively. Rather, it can only apply to semesters that begin after the approval.

Academic Leave of Absence during the Semester (Exception)

In the event of certainlegally defined unforeseen and unavoidable reasons it is also possible to submit an application for academic leave during the semester.

Application and deadline

The application after the semester has started must be submitted duly filled out and signed, together with the required proof and a copy of the student ID, via Jira to the Admissions Office.

After the semester has ended academic leave cannot be granted for the previous semester retroactively.

Refund of Tuition Fees

If you are already obliged to pay tuition fees, you can apply for a refund of the tuition fees if you apply for an academic leave for the winter semester by 30.11. / for the summer semester by 30.4. Students applying for an academic leave after this deadline are no longer entitled to a refund.

Examinations during the Semester

From the time of the Academic Leave, examinations cannot be taken, courses cannot be attended and academic papers cannot be submitted. All examinations taken before the Academic Leave remain valid.
