At all public universities in Austria tuition fee has to be paid by the students.

As a result of the statutory provisions, however, the tuition fee in degree programmes for Austrian and EU nationals must be paid after the duration of the degree programme stipulated in the curriculum is exceeded, plus two tolerance semesters:

Bachelor programme from the 9th semester
Master Programme from the 7th semester
Doctoral programme from the 9th semester
Extended Study Programme from the 3rd semester

Non-degree students and non-EU nationals are subject to tuition fees from the first semester.

Amount of the tuition fee

The tuition fee is regular € 363.36 per semester (or € 726.72 per semester for non-EU nationals). In addition to the respective tuition fee, the ÖH fee including insurance has to be paid each semester. The tuition fee has to be paid for the first-time admission to a degree programme and for the continued enrolment every semester within the admission and continuation period. \ The admission and the continued enrolment of the studies are only completed with the payment of the tuition fee.

Non-degree students

are students who

are enrolled to visit individual lectures and courses or as part of the nostrification process or
attend a continuing education programme or
take the “Studienberechtigungsprüfung”.

Regardless of their citizenship, non-degree students have to pay € 363.36 per semester and the ÖH fee within the general admission and continuation period. If you are exclusively attending a continuing education programme or the “Vorstudienlehrgang” (preparatory programme) at TU Wien, you are exempted from the tuition fee, as you will have to pay the fee of the programme you are attending along with the student union's fee.

The tuition fee, together with the ÖH fee, must be within the admission and continuation period, otherwise the admission will expire.

Exemption, waiver and reimbursement of tuition fees

Who is exempt from paying tuition fees?

In principle, there is a general obligation to pay tuition fees for all students at all Austrian universities. Exceptions are degree students who are exempt from tuition fees for a limited period of time or in general.

Temporary exemption

A temporary exemption from tuition fees exists for the prescribed duration of a bachelor's, master's or doctoral programme plus two semesters (tuition-free period) for the following degree students:

Austrian citizens,
EU citizens,
EEA citizens (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein),
Citizens of the Swiss Confederation,
Convention refugees (also from other EU countries),
beneficiaries of subsidiary protection,
Third-country nationals who have been granted one of the following residence titles:\
"Permanent Residence - EU" issued by the competent Austrian authority.\
"Permanent Residence - EU" issued by the competent authority of another Member State and a residence permit for Austria\
"Permanent residence card" issued by the competent Austrian authority
Turkish nationals on the basis of the EEC-Turkey Association Agreement if they:\
duly reside with their parents living in Austria and the parents are or were duly employed in Austria;\
have reached the highest level of integration
Students to whom the Ordinance on Groups of Persons applies (except students with a residence title "Residence Permit Students")
Students with an Austrian residence title other than "Residence Permit Students".

General exemption

Degree students who are citizens of a country listed in Annex 1 of the Decree on Tuition Fee are generally exempt from paying tuition fees. Only the ÖH fee is to be paid for the entire duration of studies.

B: Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Burundi
C: Cambodia, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo - Democratic Republic
D-E: Djibouti, Eritrea
G: Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau
H-K: Haiti, Kiribati
L: Laos - Democratic People's Republic, Lesotho, Liberia,
M: Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar
N-R: Nepal, Niger, Rwanda
S: São Tomé and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan
T: Tanzania - United Republic, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tuvalu
U-Z: Uganda, Vanuatu, Yemen, Zambia

Other non-EU-countries:\ If you have the nationality of another non-EU-country or a residence title that has not been mentioned here, you have to pay a tuition fee of 726.72 € as well as the ÖH fee from the first semester!

Waiver of tuition fee

Students can apply for a waiver of the tuition fee for the current semester at the Admission Office if there is a valid reason for the waiver. The waiver only includes the tuition fee! The ÖH fee must be paid in any case, even if the tuition fee is waived.

The application for a waiver must be submitted to the Admission Office via Jira until October 31st for winter semester and March 31st for summer semester. The required evidence must be submitted as a PDF file in the original or as a notary/court-certified copy. Documents that are not issued in German or English must be translated into German by a court-certified translator and attached.

NOTE!\ A reason for a waiver thatoccurred in the past cannot be claimed retrospectively for the current semester. The reason for a waiver must be proven within the deadline of the respective semester for the semester applied for!

Grounds for waiver for EU/EEA nationals and students with residency permit

Pursuant to section 92 para 1 UG, the following grounds for remission are provided for:

Illness or pregnancy\ An impediment to the continuation of studies caused by illness or pregnancy for at least two months in a semester
Proof: \ confirmation from a medical specialist;
Child care\ Predominant care of children living in one's own household up to the age of 7 or starting school
Proof: \ birth certificate of the child, one's own confirmation of registration and that of the child, whereby the addresses given must match, a sworn statement that the child was predominantly cared for by the student (included in the application form)
Care of (invalid) relative:
proof: \ confirmation of level of care, one's own confirmation of registration and that of the relative, confirmation of degree of relationship;

Students with the residence title “Aufenthaltsbewilligung Studierender” are exempt from waivers of tuition fee on grounds of the above mentioned reasons.

Grounds for waiver for all students, independent on nationality or residency status

Disability\ If you have a disability of at least 50%
Proof: disability certificate from the Federal Social Office;
Study grant\ Receipt of a study grant according to the Study Support Act 1992 in the previous or current semester
Proof: notification of the study grant authority;
Mobility programme\ Proof of completion of study or practical training periods within the framework of a transnational EU, state or university mobility programme (e.g. Erasmus, Socrates, Leonardo, etc.)
Proof: confirmation by the responsible coordinator or letter of recognition;
Stay abroad\ A stay abroad by a student on the basis of a binding regulation of the respective curriculum (compulsory or elective subject, internship according to regulations laid down in the curriculum)
Proof: confirmation by the Dean of Studies;
Reciprocal waiver\ A university partnership agreement of TU Wien with a university last attended by the degree foreign student, which includes a mutual waiver of the tuition fee.
Ukrainian citizenship\ Students with Ukrainian citizenship will automatically have their tuition fees waived. No separate application is required!

ÖH representative

Degree students who, during their bachelor's, master's or doctoral studies, spend at least one semester acting as a student representative as defined by the Austrian Students' Union Act (HSG 2014, Federal Law Gazette. I No. 45 as amended) at TU Wien, for the duration of their term of office, but for a maximum of four semesters in total, provided that the activity as a student representative was not longer than six semesters ago at the time of the application. As proof, a confirmation of the type and duration of the function must be submitted by the chairperson of the university representation of TU Wien or the federal representation. The tuition fee is waived according to the following key:

For 4 semesters:
Chair of the Federal Representation of the ÖH
Chairperson of the University Representation at TU Wien
Speaker of the Federal Representation of the ÖH
Speaker of the ÖH University Council
For 3 semesters:
Deputy Chair of the Federal ÖH Representative Council
Deputy chair of the university representation at TU Wien
Chair of a student representative body (faculty representative body) at TU Wien
For 2 semesters:
Clerk of the federal representation of the ÖH
Clerk of the university representation at TU Wien
Mandatary of the federal representation of the ÖH
Mandatary of the university representation at TU Wien
Mandatary of a student representation (faculty representation) at TU Wien
For 1 semester:
Representative in a university collegial body at TU Wien
First semester tutor.

Employed by TU Wien

Degree students who have been employed by TU Wien in the past semester for at least 90 days for at least 20 hours per week. (Independent) contractors are excluded.
Degree students in doctoral studies who are employed by TU Wien for at least 20 hours per week (as of the winter semester 2018). The employment relationship must exist for the semester for which the waiver is requested. The waiver is granted within the framework of private-sector administration. There is no legal entitlement.

Those waivers are usually entered automatically. Submission of an application is not necessary!

Other grounds for waivers as decided by the rectorate

In addition the following grounds for waiver of tuition fee set by the Rectorate of TU Wien (link in German) may be invoked:

Position of leadership\ If you are or have been verifiably in a position of leadership for more than two semesters in a student team, which forms annually and takes part at international competitions during your degree programme. This applies to the following student teams: TU Orchester, TU Chor, TU Racing Team, TU Robots, TU Spaceteam\ NOTE! individual application form
Extension studies\ If you are simultaneously pursuing an extension study programme and a Bachelor's or Master's degree programme and are not (yet) required to pay tuition fees in the Bachelor's or Master's degree programme, you can apply for a waiver of tuition fees if you exceed the tuition fee-free period in the extension study programme.\ Proof: current study sheet and student ID card;

Waivers on the following grounds are usually entered automatically and do not require the submission of an application

Victim's certificate\ Holders of an official certificate or a victim's identity card according to § 10 Victim Welfare Act (Federal Law Gazette no. 183/1947 i.d.F);
"Schüler_innen an die Hochschulen"\ Pupils who attend creditable courses (as non-degree students) within the framework of the programme "Schüler_innen an die Hochschulen";
MORE students\ Non-degree students who are participants in the uniko initiative "MORE" (study code UE 920 956);
IST-Austria\ Non-degree students who are students in a PhD programme of IST-Austria according to § 11 Federal Act on the Institute of Science and Technology - Austria (Federal Law Gazette I No. 69/2006 as amended), for attending individual courses (study code UE 990)

Reimbursement of tuition fee

The reimbursement or refund of the tuition fee can be made for several reasons. If grounds for reimbursement are present, students may submit an application for reimbursement of the tuition fee for the current semester at the Admission Office. The reimbursement only covers the tuition fee! For a refund of the ÖH fee please contact the student union directly.

The application for a reimbursement of tuition fees for the winter semester must be submitted to the Admissions Office by the following February 28th/29th, for the summer semester by the following 30 September 30th via Jira, enclosing the scanned original documents.

Grounds for Reimbursement

If the evidence for a statutory reason for waiving the tuition fees could not be submitted within the deadline and therefore the tuition fees for the current semester have been paid
The amount paid exceeds the fee prescribed in TISS
The payment was too late or fell short of the prescribed amount, thus invalidating the admission at TUW;
Graduation or discontinuation of studies before the end of the admission period when having already paid the prescribed tuition fee
provided that during the relevant semester no examination has been taken and no scientific work has been submitted for evaluation
Approval of Academic Leave until November 30th for the winter semester or April 30th for the summer semester
The doctoral programme has only been completed after the end of the employment by TU Wien, provided that the student has been continuously enrolled in the doctoral programme for at least 6 semesters prior to that.
