Study contents

Embedded systems are found in all areas of our lives and society without exception. Computers are embedded in cars, streetcars, medical prostheses, manufacturing robots, agricultural machinery, cranes, consumer electronics, air conditioning systems and much more. Embedded systems combine the great flexibility of software with the performance of hardware, and the high expectations for efficiency and performance place great demands on the engineers developing them. With the increased use of machine learning in embedded systems - intelligence at the edge - their need is growing rapidly. The educational focus also includes Software Engineering, Systems on Chip and Networked Systems.

Qualification profile

Have you always been interested in the interaction of hardware and software? Do you want to design something that is then actually implemented? Do you want to provide intuitive, safe and predictable use and control with novel human-machine interfaces? Then, and if you have completed a relevant bachelor's degree, the Embedded Systems Master's Programme is the right place for you.

Admission requirements

Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology

Admission with other degrees is possible after individual examination, if necessary, and additional examinations may be prescribed.

Study conditions

The laboratory exercises and practical courses of the Master's Programme Embedded Systems are equipped with high-quality and modern equipment and have sufficient space. There are enough free places in all courses and very dedicated support staff, who have been awarded for their good teaching.

Job profiles and prospects

After graduation, you can work in research and industry with self-learning sensors and sensor networks that detect anomalies and react autonomously and intelligently. You will design embedded systems that are equipped with artificial intelligence and deep neural networks and can react appropriately in challenging situations. You will design and use development tools that support the design of autonomous systems with sensors and actuators.

Application examples

The diverse range of applications for embedded systems extends from smartphones and consumer electronics to motor vehicles and aircraft. Their importance will increase significantly in the near future, for example in the Internet of Things and in cyber-physical systems.

current research topics

Main focus

The Embedded Systems Master's Programme is one of the four Master's Programms in electrical engineering and information technology and has a bridging function to computer science. Embedded systems are computers embedded in a technical system of electronic and usually also mechanical components, combining the great flexibility of software with the performance of hardware. Educational focus areas include integrated circuit design, systems on chip, FPGA design, firmware, software and systems engineering, and distributed sensor networks.

Abroad & Internships

The program does not require a mandatory internship. The lecturers provide support in arranging stays abroad, which can usually be smoothly integrated into the Master's Programme.
