Programme contents

The Master's Programme Material Sciences aims to provide a broad and fundamental education in the field of the scientific basis of materials, as well as their manufacture, examination, characterisation and application. In addition to such knowledge, graduates should also be capable of assessing and taking the societal and ecological dimensions of new materials into account .

In the Master's Programme Material Sciences, relevant competencies from the faculties of Technical Chemistry, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mathematics & Geo-information, Mechanical & Industrial Engineering and Electrical Engineering & Information Technology will be brought together into an inter-faculty programme offering a comprehensive interdisciplinary education in the principles and applications of materials.

The Master's Programme Material Sciences at TU Wien is notable for its strong orientation towards basic principles and for its wide scope, which provides plenty of opportunities for diversification. Although the course has been designed to offer relevant professional training, graduates will also acquire the skills and competencies needed for further study at doctoral level at TU Wien. The structure of the study plan for the master's programme Material Sciences takes the different and to some degree complementary specialisations of its new students into account by means of compulsory modules. Provision is made for individuals to decide between specialisation and more general training within the scope of elective modules.

Study conditions

The Master's Programme Material Sciences has a very good staff-to-student ratio. In order to ensure that the course can be completed within four semesters as envisaged, the planned compulsory lectures are broadly coordinated across the faculties. If a student undertakes employment alongside studies, the time required for the course will be correspondingly longer.

Career prospects

Material Sciences represents an important and forward-looking field of applied research in universities, non-university research facilities and industry. Opportunities exist in material processing, modelling of technical systems and consultancy in technical-scientific fields.
