A Balance Between your Family and your Career/Research/Studies

At TU Wien, we believe that it is our duty to allow our members to care for their children or relatives alongside their career or academic work. By doing so, we are confronting one of the most significant societal challenges.  The Vice Rector for Personnel is responsible for matters relating to balancing family and student/work life.

The office “Büro Kids & Care” for compatibility, was set up as point of contact and service point for balancing life at the university with family life. TU Wien was the first university to replace the role of childcare officer with that of Representative for Family-Work / Study Life Balance Issues, who reports to the Vice Rector Human Resources. They advise the university management on matters relating to the strategic alignment of the work-life balance, provide support when it comes to carrying out needs assessments and are available to advise TUW members on confidential questions on combining their family life with their career or studies.

In addition to a range of support options for employees with childcare obligations, TU Wien is developing support measures for employees with relatives in need of care to make it easier for them to balance their career and their family.

Family At University

The universities in the best practice club 'Familie in der Hochschule' are considered to be pioneers when it comes to social development towards increasing the focus on family and respecting diversity. These universities integrate the idea of balance and compatibility when developing their profiles. This is believed to be a task for the management and the university as a whole. By signing the ‘Family at the university’ charter, institutions commit to maintaining defined standards for balancing family life with studies, teaching, research and other supporting activities. Lots of member universities in Germany and Austria have already signed the charter.

TU Wien was the first of Vienna’s universities to sign in June 2015 and has joined the best practice club.
