Robotic Surgery and VR/AR Assisted Planning

Though robotic surgery in orthopedics has come of age, virtual and augmented reality with pre-operative imaging and a tracking system is gaining momentum. A recent survey indicates that AR has the potential ‘to be timesaving, risk and radiation reducing and accuracy enhancing technology’.

Fracture Healing, Regrowth and Remodeling

Fracture healing, regrowth and remodeling can be classified as an area called mechanobiology, where the mechanics meets biology. Researchers will understand this area to aid implant design, treatment protocol and surgical planning.

Sports Biomechanics

Sports biomechanics is a precise and quantitative field that relies on fundamentalmechanics from Newton. Experimental research in sports biomechanics combines several engineering disciplines, from sensor technology and optics to image and signalprocessing. The Department of Medical Sciences & Technology at IIT Madras will have the enormous bench strength to conduct path-breaking research in Sports Biomechanics.
