The Department, founded in the year 2023, carries out fundamental and applied research programs connecting various medical disciplines. In a spectrum that spans engineering and medicine, bio-medical research is usually at the engineering end of the spectrum. The clear value proposition of the Department of Medical Sciences & Technology will be to conduct research from the clinical end of the spectrum rather than from the engineering end. The programmes offered by the Department will train physicians to effectively apply technology in their clinical practice, and will lay the foundation for physician-scientists’ training in India.
BS Programme in Medical Sciences & Engineering
The Four Year BS Programme in Medical Sciences & Engineering is a game-changing interdisciplinary programme that bridges Medicine & Engineering. The course structure involves an internship in a hospital to tie theory and practice. The courses in the programme will be taught by both medical & engineering faculty, and will provide a strong research base for students. The programme will offer specialisations in a number of areas through elective subjects, and will cover emerging areas at the cutting edge of Medicine, like the application of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare, new device development, new drug discovery, medical image analysis, and digital twins.
PhD Programme for Doctors
The PhD Programme for Doctors is a first-of-its-kind programme with the aim of grooming Phyisican-Scientists who will drive innovation in healthcare and supercharge research in critical fields of medicine. The programme will enable clinicians to delve deep into a problem area of their interest, either independently or in tandem with an engineer who will support the research.
The Programme will be tailored to the unique interest of the student so that they can pursue a scientific enquiry that might have its origin in their own clinical practice.

The Department of Medical Sciences & Technology was formally inaugurated on May 11, 2023. The chief guest for the event was Mr. Lakshmi Narayanan, Ex-CEO and Co-Founder, Cognizant. Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, addressed the event in the presence of members of the Steering Committee of the Department, Prof. R. Krishna Kumar, Institute Professor, IIT Madras, Prof. Boby George, Head, DMST and renowned doctors from across the country.
