The Joint PhD Program (JDP) Support Grant is designed to support IIT Madras PhD students enrolled in Joint Degree Programs in undertaking research visits to partner institutions abroad. The grant aims to facilitate international academic exposure, enhance collaborative research, and provide students with access to world-class facilities at host universities.
Eligibility
- Open to IIT Madras students registered under the Joint PhD Program.
- Students must have an official invitation/acceptance from the host university and approval from their IITM supervisor.
- The grant is intended to partially support travel and related expenses during the visit.
- The scholar must have completed the Student Mobility form to avail this grant -
Documents Required (to be uploaded along with the application)
- Passport-size photograph of the applicant.
- No Objection Certificate (NOC) / Bonafide letter from the Academic Section or approval letter/email from the Supervisor/HoD/Faculty Advisor.
- Acceptance letter from the host university/institute.
- Copy of Passport (valid for the duration of travel).
- Copy of Visa.
- Expense bills/receipts (tickets, boarding passes, other relevant documents) – collated into a single PDF.
- Details of other funding sources (IITM/IoE/PMRF/external agencies, if applicable).
Application Process

Complete Application Form
Complete the JDP Support Grant Application Form with all required details.

Upload Documents
Upload all supporting documents in the prescribed format.

Supervisor Approval
The application will be forwarded to your IITM Supervisor for approval.

Committee Review
The proposal will be reviewed by the Travel Grant Committee.

Receive Decision
The final decision will be communicated via email.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can apply for this grant?
Only students enrolled in the IIT Madras Joint PhD Program with a confirmed visit to the partner institute are eligible. IITM home students should have completed the student outbound form https://ge.iitm.ac.in/forms/student-outbound.
What expenses are covered?
The grant covers travel expenses, mostly the to and fro airfare, and will also cover visa charges, insurance, etc., to an extent. Food and accommodation expenses are not covered.
Can I apply if I already receive funding from another source?
Yes, but you must disclose all funding sources. The grant is meant to supplement existing support and avoid duplication of funding.
When should I apply?
You should apply well before your planned departure date, ideally after receiving the host institute’s acceptance letter and after obtaining your visa with the necessary approvals.
Is the funding guaranteed?
No. Applications will be evaluated on merit, need, and availability of funds.
Can I apply multiple times during my PhD?
No, this will only cover one-time to and fro airfare under the JDP framework.
