The programme provides students with an intellectual training in the disciplines of History and Philosophy, which are mutually enriching subjects. Its key premise is that understanding the present (and anticipating the future) requires the ability to study and interpret the past and to appreciate how the tools of historical inquiry and the insights of philosophical theory combine to illuminate human societies, including those of the contemporary world. \
\
The study of Philosophy enables students to learn about cutting-edge debates on ethics, metaphysics, theory of knowledge and political philosophy, as well as studying some of the key thinkers in the history of philosophy, such as Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, Mill and Marx. The programme is designed to equip students with a range of skills which together foster the ability to practise self-motivated learning and increase the capacity to undertake independent learning in a progressive way.\
\
History is vital to understanding the world around us. What is gender, race, class, religion, the state, empire, or capitalism? What is the USA, China, the United Kingdom, Ireland? What is NATO and the EU? Our historians explain the modern world by reaching back to the Roman empire, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Reformation and the great modern revolutions across all of Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia. From their first year, we trust our students to make choices and range widely across all these histories to understand where we have come from. And from the beginning of your degree you will be taught in small groups by expert historians. Our range in time and space, our trust in you to explore and make good choices, and our small group teaching from the first year of the degree, mark us out among our peer universities.

History at Queen’s has been placed in the QS World University Rankings top 200 History departments in the world for 2025.

##### Global Opportunities

The History programme offers students opportunities to travel and study at universities in Europe and North America. Short-term (two weeks) and longer-term (up to one academic year) exchanges are on offer.\
\
Possible examples include:\

• Institut d’Etudes Politques de Bordeaux (France)\

Field trips may also be offered in particular years or as part of certain modules.

##### Industry Links

Several modules include links with local collaborative partners, which provide students with opportunities to network with experts in the field or to gain experience of particular industries prior to graduation. Internships have also been developed to allow students the opportunity to carry out work experience in history-related fields.

The School has an active Employers’ Forum that is used to forge links with national and international employers. Queen‘s philosophy graduates have an unlimited range of occupations in he public and private sectors, including he Civil Service, local government, the media, policy analysis, the voluntary sector, teaching, journalism, business, marketing and advertising. Career destinations of our students have included the BBC, the Diplomatic Service, the NHS, International House, RPS Belfast and the Belfast Education and Library Board.

There is an active student-run Philosophy Society and the School is also the home of the Belfast branch of the Royal Institute of Philosophy, which organises regular talks and seminars by distinguished visiting philosophers. History provides a welcome and stimulating environment for new students.

According to the Guardian University Guide 2025, 90% of Queen’s History graduates find graduate-level jobs or are in further study within 15 months of graduation.
