We are #1 in the UK for Food Science teaching (Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025) and #2 in the Complete University Guide 2026.\ \ This degree programme is about gaining the knowledge and understanding of key areas in relation to food production and consumption. \ \ Food Science concerns the ‘fitness for purpose’ of our food in terms of appearance (e.g. colour and surface qualities, texture, flavour and odour) and how these can be improved, alongside the physical, microbiological and chemical aspects of our food, which may be harmful to human health and how these can be minimised. \ \ Nutrition concerns the nutrient supply from foods necessary to support the human body in health and during ill health throughout all life stages. \ \ This degree emphasises the inter-relationship between these areas and their equal importance in food production.

Our new School of Biological Sciences building in Chlorine Gardens provides a high-tech learning environment and allows us to create a unique experience for our students.

Course highlights

Professional Accreditations

The programme has undergone a professional accreditation process overseen by the Institute for Food Science and Technology (IFST). This provides quality assurance that the programme offers students ‘the best possible food-related education’.

Career Development

Work placements on these programmes provide students with the opportunity to utilise the practical skills gained during the teaching of their degree and apply these in a work environment. \ \ For many students this is the most important aspect of the degree, enabling them to experience the types of jobs which are available on graduation and through the preparation of CVs, interviews, etc. ensuring they are well prepared for the job market.\ \ Our past students have gained work placement with organisations such as: Pepsico, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, Nomad Foods, Kellogg Co, The Food Standards Agency, Finnebrogue, Suki Tea, Dale Farm, Nestlé, Kerry group, Kraft Foods, Moy Park, Tayto, Hovis, Taste of Ulster, Ulster Cancer Foundation, NI Chest, Heart & Stroke, hospital trusts and many more.

World Class Facilities

As part of their Food Innovation module, our students experience the excitement of creating and developing a brand-new product inspired by an emerging food trend. Discover their innovative ideas and hear what they have to say about the process!

Student Experience

We are very proud that our students have had notable successes in UK wide IFST competitions, including our student team who were Silver winners at Ecotrophelia UK 2024 , creating a cookie dough product made from brewers spent grain. Watch this video to hear Team NoDoh share their exciting competition experience at Nestle in England where they secured second place in the UK final by impressing the "Dragons" judging panel and received £1000 and a year's free IFST membership.

Further Study Opportunities

The unique flexible design of these degrees enables transfer to the MSci Food Science & Nutrition up until the end of Stage 2 (provided students meet the necessary requirements).

“What initially drew me to this subject was my interest in the role that nutrition plays in human health, particularly its application within healthcare settings. I was also aware of Northern Ireland's thriving food and beverage manufacturing industry, which further influenced my decision. The course at Queen’s appealed to me because it offered a combination of industry-specific quality and safety, along with nutrition-focused modules, giving me insight into both areas I was keen to explore."\ \ “As the food and beverage industry continues to grow and as global trade increases and regulations evolve, it becomes even more crucial that countries can access efficient, reliable methods for testing food quality and safety.”\ \ “It’s definitely been a rich and varied experience. From practicals, presentations, and site visits to entrepreneurial start-up planning and guest lectures, there’s been a bit of everything. One of the things I’m proudest of is how much my confidence has grown, especially in public speaking. I came into university not being the most confident speaker, but through presentations, group projects, and interaction with lecturers, I’ve come a long way.”\ \ \ “Get involved and make the most of every opportunity. Say yes to things that challenge you, because that’s how you’ll grow. Aim to do your best, but don’t be too hard on yourself, maintaining a balance between your academic work and social life is key. It’s all about showing up, putting the effort in, and enjoying the journey.”\ \ Alex Reid\ https://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/SchoolofBiologicalSciences/Graduation/Summer2025/AlexReid.html

When I came to Queen’s I was intrigued to learn more about Food Quality as I had an interest in working in the area of food, particularly within the area of Nutrition. I would really recommend this course at Queen’s, it has given me to opportunity to learn so much and I’m now employed in a local food producer and I’m able to put the knowledge from my course into practice.\ Geraldine Renaghan\ Food Quality Coordinator – Suki TEA

“I'm so excited to be graduating with a degree in Food Science and Nutrition with Professional Studies. I had an absolutely brilliant time at Queen’s and I’m devastated to be leaving.”\ \ “On my placement I worked with Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke as a student health promotion officer and I loved it so, so much. My main job was delivering talks to the likes of primary school pupils regarding healthy eating, physical activity, sleep and things like that.”\ \ “We worked a lot with secondary schools where the main focus was vaping, as schools had told us how big of an issue it is among teenagers. We reached 15,000 pupils across about 35 schools, which was really impressive. We also worked with policymakers in Stormont to drive the disposable vape bans across Northern Ireland, which was really successful.”\ \ “A highlight of my university experience was entering the Institute of Food Science Technology's Ecotrophelia competition, where myself and some friends entered a ready to eat or ready to cook cookie dough which utilised brewers’ spent grain, a massive nutritional waste in the food industry. We got to pitch our idea to industry leaders such as Tesco and Marks and Spencer's and we fortunately came second.”\ \ “The InnovateHer programme was absolutely amazing. My top tip for any younger students is to take any opportunity as you see it because you never know where it'll take you and the skills you can learn along the way really set you apart from other candidates.”\ \ “I have fortunately got a position with Taste of Ulster, or Good Food, as you might know it from the Balmoral Show or the plaques you might see in restaurants. I'm so excited to be starting there in September.”\ \ Sarah Carlisle\ https://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/SchoolofBiologicalSciences/Graduation/Summer2025/SarahCarlisle.html
