Politics and Sociology
Apply via UCAS Register Interest
Entry year : Academic Year 2027/28
Entry requirements : ABB
Attendance : 3 years (Full-time) \ 6 years (Part-time) \
UCAS Code : LL23
This programme combines two major social science subjects: politics and sociology, aiming to equip students with the tools - the concepts, theories, and concrete evidence - to understand changing social and political relations. Politics contributes a focus on conflict and cooperation with a focus on power and processes of collective decision-making. Sociology contributes to an understanding of the wider social context within which politics takes place - the shape of social relations, practices and major social institutions, like, family, economy, and state, incorporating explanations of social stability and change. Both share an interest in power, conflict, solidarity, equality, and social and political identities. Combining these two disciplines in this way equips our students to understand and engage with the challenges of contemporary social and political life.

Jessica Simonds:\ \ "I chose Queen’s because the wide choice of modules essentially allows me to build my own degree. I enjoy the way we are taught through lectures and tutorials where we are given an overview of a topic, able to research more for ourselves, and then debate with our peers in tutorial sessions. The school is very open to the input of students and I enjoy the level of student engagement through societies and student-staff consultative committees.”
This is a new programme, however, here are the testimonials from some of our Politics and Sociology single honours degree students: \ \ Anna Savage - BA Sociology Graduate, Statistical Officer, NISRA:\ \ “My Sociology degree opened my eyes about the world - I now question everything and my curiosity has grown! It has helped in my current job as I developed my analytical and problem-solving skills, which are essential for the workplace.”
