At RWTH Aachen University, women remain underrepresented in most areas. To address this imbalance, the University has set a goal of increasing the proportion of women in professorial positions to 30 percent by 2030. In addition, discipline-specific gender quotas for hiring are determined for the various faculties in accordance with § 37a HG NRW using the cascade model. The current quotas for each discipline are published in the official announcement linked here. Please note that these documents are only available in German.

Gender Quotas Under the Higher Education Act

The cascade model is a quota system designed to increase the proportion of women at successive career stages in higher education. The goal is for the share of women at each higher level to reflect the proportion of women at the level below.

Under § 37a HG NRW, the proportion of women at the rank immediately below professorship is used as the benchmark for setting targets in new appointments. This step serves as the reference point within the cascade.

Facts and Figures

RWTH publishes annual gender monitoring data that track the representation of women and men across different roles and areas of the University, as well as changes over time. These data highlight progress, stagnation, or even regression, making it possible to evaluate whether additional measures are needed or whether existing initiatives are having an impact. Gender monitoring is therefore both an accountability tool and a means of benchmarking against other universities nationally and internationally.

For reasons of data protection, and because automatic data collection does not (yet) adequately capture diverse gender identities, the data continue to be reported in binary categories.

Women Students in STEM Fields

This report provides an overview of trends in the proportion of women students in STEM (MINT) fields at RWTH Aachen University since the winter semester of 2008/09. During this period, women have made up more than 50% of students in biology and architecture, while remaining significantly underrepresented in fields such as computer science and mechanical engineering (fewer than 20 percent). In many disciplines, the proportion of women has stagnated or even declined.
