The FBM specialization at the Biotechnology MSc Eng education is together with the FBM specialization in the Chemical and Biochemical Engineering MSc Eng education supported by a large grant to develop and increase competence transfer between the two educations for nurturing industrially required cross competence fermentation experts. To ensure this desired outcome, the FBM specialization is more restricted in its choices than other specializations, and furthermore the projects for the Master thesis has to be accepted by both the study leader and the FBM Joint program manager to for offering FBM core competences.

Specializations are merely recommended ways of choosing the courses in the curriculum. Applicants are not admitted to a specialization but to the programme and it is possible to choose among all the courses in the curriculum following the directions given. However, if a specialization has been fulfilled the title of the specialization may be added to the diploma.
