You have the opportunity to apply for an exemption from a number of admission rules if there are special circumstances that can be documented.
Exemptions will not be granted due to forgetfulness, misunderstanding, lack of knowledge of the rules, or failure to meet deadlines.\ \

The deadlines for uploading your exemption application are as follows:
- Summer admission: March 15 at 12:00 p.m.
- Winter admission: October 15 at 12:00 p.m.

Exceeding deadlines
When applying for admission the final deadline for uploading your final diploma and transcript is July 5th.
It is possible to apply for an exemption from the deadline for uploading the final diploma.
However, we cannot process applications after July 8th. Therefore, July 8th, 2025, is the latest date we can receive diplomas, provided an exemption is granted.
If unusual circumstances have affected your qualifying exam
If you have experienced unusual circumstances that have affected the average result of your qualifying exam, you have the opportunity to apply for an exemption.
To apply for an exemption due to unusual circumstances, you must describe in your own words the basis on which you are applying for the exemption. You must upload your exemption application to your electronic application on optagelse.dk along with relevant documentation.
- Relevant documentation will typically include:
- Medical certificate or medical record
- Specialist statement in connection with disabilities
- Statement from a psychologist or psychiatrist
- Annual grades from your qualifying exam
Non-qualifying exam
You can apply for an exemption/recognition if you have obtained qualifications equivalent to a Danish upper secondary exam.
When assessing your application, we evaluate:
- whether your qualifications can be considered equivalent to a Danish upper secondary exam.
- whether you meet the specific admission requirements for the programme you are applying to.
You must attach relevant documentation, such as:
- proof of completed educational activities at upper secondary level or higher
- transcripts and course descriptions
Master's degree rule (Kandidatreglen)
The master’s degree rule applies to all applicants who have completed a master’s degree in Denmark as well as international master’s degrees that equate to a Danish master’s degree.\ If you already have a master ’s degree, you can only be accepted to a bachelor's degree program if there are vacant study places. Also, be aware that you cannot apply for a standby place.
In case that there are more applicants with a master's degree than there are vacant places at a program, applicants with a high quota 2 assessment will be prioritized first and secondly, applicants from quota 1 will be prioritized by their grade point average from their upper secondary school.
You can apply for an exemption from the rule in case of special circumstances only. Exemptions are only granted in case of documented special circumstances that prevent you from using your already-acquired master’s degree. Please note that labour market matters such as high unemployment rates are not considered special circumstances.
If you wish to apply for an exemption from the master’s degree rule, you do so by uploading an application as an attachment to your application at optagelse.dk along with documentation that proves your special circumstances.
It is not possible to apply for an exemption from the specific admission requirements. If you do not fulfill one or more of the specific admission requirements, we advise that you raise your level by taking a supplementary course instead.
If we grant your exemption application, please note that this does not mean you will be offered admission to the specific program.
You must still log in to UnistartDTU on July 28 (summer admission) or at the end of week 50 (winter admission) to see if you have been offered a study place or not.
