Mobile/wireless communication and Internet of Things specialization

Design, modelling and implementation of mobile wireless communication networks. Learn how to design and build the future communication systems  for 5G mobile and Internet of Things.

Purpose and Content

This specialization is aimed at students with interests in the principles and architectures of current and future wireless communication networks for high-speed mobile communication (5G and beyond) or Internet of Things (IoT). The specialisation focuses on both telecommunication networks, such as the existing  communication networks and networks for mobile communications, e.g., 4G, LTE and 5G and beyond, and on data communication networks, e.g., local area networks (LANs) and the Internet. Furthermore, this specialization also covers technologies and protocols for Internet of Things (e.g.LoRaWAN, LoRa, NB-IoT, LTE-M, etc.), IoT device prototyping, microcontroller programming, IoT cloud backends, security and other IoT related topics.

Traditionally, communication networks have been divided in network for telecommunication and for data communication, but now the network technologies tend to converge. Furthermore, the traditional services, such as fixed-line telephony, email, web-browsing, will be supplemented or even replaced by advanced multimedia services. The design and implementation of these advanced services on future networks, requires engineers who understand the technology involved and can determine the requirements of the services.

In the courses that are part of this specialization, the student will acquire a thorough understanding of network technologies and network architectures, e.g., communication protocols and core and access networks, so that he/she can work with the design and implementation of new services, networks and protocols. The graduates will be able to work in areas of telecommunication network (mobile & IoT) operation and management, capacity planning, network and IoT device security and others.

Career Profile\ The graduates from this specialisation can work in a number of different areas. At network operators, such as telecommunication operators or internet service providers, the graduates can work with both design and implementation of new services, supervision and network management, and capacity planning. Another possibility is companies that manufacture devices and terminals for communication networks, e.g., routers, switches, mobile phones. A third possibility for the graduates is to work as consultants, where they would advice private and public customers on the use of network technologies.

Finally, graduates could find work within the topic of IoT. Either IoT device development or wireless technology and network planning for mobile operators or smaller companies exploiting IoT technologies in their own business. Graduates could also choose to work as consultants within the broad range of IoT topics, IoT security, cloud backends, technology advisors or device development.

Structure of Studies\ This specialization requires that the students fulfill the requirements specified in the admission description of the programme in Communication and System Design described in the programme specification.

In addidtion to the compulsory courses and requirements listed in the Curriculum, the following rules apply for this specialization:

For the Advanced programme specific courses, the student must choose a total of 15 ECTS within the list below (if total of more than 15 ECTS of technological specialization courses are chosen, they will count in the Electives category).

For students with main interest in mobile communication, courses 34343, 34351 and 34371 are recommended.

For student with main interest in IoT, courses 34346, 34365, 34371, 34373 and 34374 are recommended.

Specializations are merely recommended ways of choosing the courses in the curriculum. Applicants are not admitted to a specialization but to the programme and it is possible to choose among all the courses in the curriculum following the directions given. However, if a specialization has been fulfilled the title of the specialization may be added to the diploma.
