Chemical and Biochemical Product Engineering

Specialization: Chemical and Biochemical Product Engineering

Product engineering within the field of chemical and biochemical engineering is a direction students with interest in design, functionality, and synthesis of advanced biological and chemical materials and products can choose to specialize in. It naturally includes a strong emphasis on the mathematical description of physio-chemical phenomena and properties as these are important for the product as well as the synthesis and production techniques. A strong connection to physics, chemistry, biochemistry, and microbiology is present. Any individual study plan ought to include some process technological elements.

The following program specific and polytechnical foundation courses are mandatory to obtain this specialisation in chemical and biochemical product engineering

12100 Quantitative methods to assess sustainability (Polytechnical Foundation) 5 point F7 (Tues 18-22)
or
12106 Quantitative methods to assess sustainability (Polytechnical Foundation) 5 point Autumn E3B (Fri 13-17)
or
12105 Quantitative methods to assess sustainability (Polytechnical Foundation) 5 point E7 (Tues 18-22)
or
12101 Quantitative methods to assess sustainability (Polytechnical Foundation) 5 point Spring F3B (Fri 13-17)
27246 Applied enzyme technology and kinetics 5 point E7 (Tues 18-22)
or
28242 Chemical Kinetics and Catalysis 5 point Autumn E1A (Mon 8-12)
28213 Polymer Technology 5 point Autumn E3A (Tues 8-12)
28311 Chemical and Biochemical Product Design 5 point Autumn E2A (Mon 13-17)
28412 Advanced Chemical Product Design 5 point January
28434 Membrane Technology 5 point Spring F1A (Mon 8-12)
28530 Transport Processes 10 point Autumn E5 (Wed 8-17)
42500 Innovation in Engineering (Polytechnical Foundation) 5 point January
or
42504 Innovation in Engineering (Polytechnical Foundation) 5 point August
or
42501 Innovation in Engineering (Polytechnical Foundation) 5 point June

\

It is furthermore required to achieve min 20 ECTS among the following program specific and elective courses:

22281 Biomaterials 5 point Spring F3B (Fri 13-17)
23522 Rheology of food and biological materials 5 point January
26620 Chemistry and Innovation 5 point June

Electives,

i.e., courses not counting as the polytechnic foundation or program specific courses in MSc Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, allow a study plan within chemical and biochemical product engineering to be broadened in scope. This can be done either by choosing additional programme specific courses but the following elective courses are relevant in contexct of an education in chemical and biochemical engineering with special focus on product engineering.

A few examples of electives are listed below in connection with the study plan examples.

02451 Introduction to Machine Learning 5 point Spring F4A (Tues 13-17)
12772 Life Cycle Assessment of Products and Systems 10 point Autumn E1 (Mon 8-12, Thurs 13-17)
26428 Spectroscopy of Organic Compounds 5 point Spring F4B (Fri 8-12)
28212 Polymer Chemistry 5 point Spring F3A (Tues 8-12)
28217 Organic Coatings Science and Technology – Practical Exercises 2.5 point June
28316 Laboratory Course in Colloid and Surface Chemistry 5 point January
41739 Experimental plastic and metal processing technology 5 point June
46420 Composite Materials and Fibres 5 point Autumn E2A (Mon 13-17)
47339 Solid state and structural chemistry 5 point Autumn E1A (Mon 8-12)
47341 AI4Materials: Artificial Intelligence for Accelerated Materials Design and Discovery 10 point Autumn E5 (Wed 8-17)

Examples of study plans

Two examples are shown: one for students beginning their MSc study in September, and one for students beginning their MSc study in February.

The study plans are examples only. Students are free to exchange the shown courses with other courses if the general requirements for the curriculum in chemical and biochemical engineering is satisfied. The proposed plans fulfil requirements of the curriculum in terms of the polytechnic foundation, programme specific coursed and thesis but do not fill all 120 ECTS. A few programme specific courses in excess of the required 55 ECTS are here included and these will count as electives.

Specializations are merely recommended ways of choosing the courses in the curriculum. Applicants are not admitted to a specialization but to the programme and it is possible to choose among all the courses in the curriculum following the directions given. However, if a specialization has been fulfilled the title of the specialization may be added to the diploma.
