### **Use of Library Resources and Services**

- Library databases
- HKU Libraries have negotiated licenses with information providers, publishers, and vendors of databases to lease access to data for the HKU community. Not all licenses read alike. Library users are reminded to read and observe the terms and conditions of use of each database as they use it. These are generally set out on the welcome page of the database, under “Terms & Conditions”, “Terms of Use”, “Conditions of Use”, “Terms of Access”, “User Agreement”, “Copyright”, or “License Agreement”, etc. [General information on Prohibited Uses and Excessive Downloading can be found here](https://lib.hku.hk/general/warning.html). Failure to observe the terms will result in copyright infringement, and users will be liable for any damages resulting from such infringements.

- Performing, playing, or showing of copyright works
- Under the Hong Kong Copyright Ordinance ([Cap. 528 s. 43](https://www.elegislation.gov.hk/hk/cap528?xpid=ID_1438403328819_001)), performing, playing or showing copyright works is allowed if it is before an audience consisting wholly or mainly of teachers and pupils at an educational establishment, parents or guardians of pupils at the establishment, and other persons directly connected with the activities of the establishment for the purposes of giving or receiving instruction. The performing, playing or showing of a sound recording, film, broadcast, or cable programme in public or for other purposes may require further licensing and permission from the copyright owner or licensing bodies to avoid copyright infringement. Consult the [Copyright Licensing Bodies Registry](https://www.ipd.gov.hk/en/copyright/copyright-licensing-bodies-registry/index.html) maintained by the Hong Kong Intellectual Property Department.
