Master of Philosophy Programme

Programme Overview : The research programme is designed to prepare nurses to conduct research in nursing through a supervised research project in their chosen area.

Programme Structure and Overview

MPhil programmes are available in full-time and part-time modes and the periods of study are listed below:

MPhil Full-time 24 months 12 months
MPhil Part-time 36 months 18 months

To be eligible for the award of the Master of Philosophy (MPhil), a candidate, who on the successful completion of formal coursework requirements, and an approved scheme of research, shall:

  1. present a successful thesis representing the result of the candidate's research which displays some originality and which demonstrates a sound understanding of the field of study and appropriate research methods; and
  2. satisfy the examiners in an oral examination (and any other examination if required) in matters relevant to the subject of the thesis.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Master of Philosophy Programme, candidates shall:

  1. comply with the General Regulations;

  2. hold either:

a. a Bachelor's degree with honours from this University; or

b. another qualification of equivalent standard from this University or

from another university or  comparable institution accepted for this purpose;

  1. hold any additional qualifications as required by the Faculty concerned; and

  2. satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination if required.

Note: A candidate who does not hold a Bachelor's degree with honours from this University or another qualification of equivalent standard may in exceptional circumstances be permitted to register for the degree on demonstrating adequate preparation for research studies at this level, and satisfying the examiners in a qualifying examination.
