What you'll study

This programme aims to equip students with both theoretical insights and practical skills in computer science. Emphasising practical application, it focuses on software engineering, computer systems, and their real-world applications.

Core modules introduce fundamental computing concepts, complemented by specialised courses in database systems and software engineering—critical for aspiring professionals in computer science.

Students can tailor their studies by selecting either the Business or Software Systems streams, culminating in a substantial final project.

This programme is accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, for the purposes of partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional.

Structure

All students studying MSc Computer Science (Conversion) will undertake six compulsory modules:

They will also choose a set of elective modules, organised into two streams:

Software Systems stream (default)

Data Analytics stream

These streams will allow you to further develop your professional profile and graduate with industry-relevant expertise. The Software Systems stream is the default stream students will follow, if they do not select an option.

Find out more about each module by looking them up in the module directory.

Please note that all modules are subject to change.

Assessment

Modules are assessed through a combination of coursework and written examinations. You will also be assessed through a final project.

Research project

Examples of past project topics include:

Teaching

Teaching for all modules includes a combination of lectures, seminars and use of a virtual learning environment. Each module provides contact time with your lecturers, supported by lab work and directed further study.

You will be assigned an Academic Advisor who will guide you in both academic and pastoral matters throughout your time at Queen Mary.

Part-time study options often mean that the number of modules taken is reduced per semester, with the full modules required to complete the programme spread over two academic years.
