China is rapidly advancing its strategic focus on artificial intelligence, robotics, digital infrastructure, and intelligent manufacturing under its national policies such as the Digital China Initiative and AI+ Action Plan.

The MSc in Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Smart Technology is an interdisciplinary, future-focused programme designed to equip students with both the technical expertise and entrepreneurial mindset required to drive innovation in these rapidly evolving smart technology sectors.

What you'll study

Please note that this programme is delivered entirely in China, on the Beijing Campus of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) and is open to Chinese nationals only. The programme is within the Joint Education Institute between Queen Mary and BUPT.

Designed for students from technical backgrounds, this programme equips future tech leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators with the skills to develop and scale smart technology solutions in a global context.

The curriculum is grounded in real-world entrepreneurial application, equipping students with the skills to create, finance, and scale technology ventures. Alongside this, students will build technical fluency in emerging areas such as machine learning and digital innovation, ensuring they can translate advanced technologies into impactful business solutions.

Students will benefit from teaching and supervision by expert academics from both Queen Mary and BUPT, a diverse international learning environment, and hands-on project work that encourages innovation and collaboration.

Module Highlights

Digital Ecosystem Development 

Digital innovation rarely happens in isolation. In this module, you will explore how platforms, distributed systems, and organisational networks interact to create value. You will develop systems-level thinking skills that enable you to design and evaluate integrated digital solutions within complex environments.

Technology Entrepreneurship and Business Strategy

This module explores how technology-driven ideas can be developed into viable ventures. You will examine strategic positioning, competitive dynamics, resource allocation, and value creation in fast-moving markets. Through applied case analysis and group-based work, you will learn how to align technical capability with commercial strategy and long-term growth.

Machine Learning and Data Analysis

In this module, you will develop the ability to analyse complex datasets, build predictive models, and critically evaluate model performance. Emphasis is placed not only on technical implementation but also on understanding assumptions, limitations, and real-world application. By the end of the module, you will be able to translate analytical insights into meaningful decisions in innovation and technology contexts.
