## What you'll study
You will explore how natural systems can be valued, restored, and managed to support both ecological integrity and sustainable investment. Core modules cover key themes such as natural capital and ecosystem services, environmental restoration and rewilding, biodiversity loss, sustainable finance, and environmental values. You will gain an advanced understanding of how scientific, economic, and ethical perspectives intersect in the design and delivery of sustainability solutions.
You will also develop practical skills in data acquisition and environmental analysis using a range of field, laboratory, and geospatial analysis methods, with the opportunity to apply these in your research.
A major component of the programme is the individual research project, where you have the option to work with an external sustainability organisation and/or on ongoing research projects led by the teaching team. This project allows you to apply your learning to real-world challenges, supported by expert supervision and potentially opening doors to future employment or further research.
### Additional costs
Non-residential fieldwork within and around London (tube/ train fares) will incur modest travel costs that you will need to cover. Other transport costs (e.g., coach) are included in the fee. Your independent research project can include fieldwork conducted in the UK or overseas. There is a limited amount of financial support available for research costs from the Water Conservation Trust. Applications for dissertation funding support are submitted with a short research proposal and considered by the Programme Director, and you would be responsible for the costs associated with this.
Enrolment in the elective module BIO796P would involve an additional cost to you for the Borneo field trip (approximately £2000 in 2025-26).

### Compulsory/Core modules
#### Biodiversity Loss - Challenges and Solutions
This module examines the causes and consequences of biodiversity loss from the landscape- to global-scale, alongside the strategies being adopted to mitigate and reverse these effects. You will learn about the impacts of climate change, pollution, habitat loss and agriculture, as well as national, regional and international policies and frameworks (e.g. EU Biodiversity Strategy, CITES, IUCN and Nagoya). You will be trained in how to evaluate data quality for evidence-based recommendations, and in grant writing for real-world projects, case studies, such as illegal wildlife trade and plastic pollution. Interactions with practitioners will offer direct insights into the pressing threats to biodiversity and its conservation. This core module is taught at both Queen Mary and the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew.
#### Financing Sustainability
This module will explore new social and green financial instruments and investment strategies that seek to deliver on both shareholder returns and sustainable development goals. It will cover trends and models including social and green finance, impact investing, blended finance, public private partnerships, microfinance and social impact bonds. We will draw on real-life case studies from the Global North and the Global South to examine their potential for contributing towards sustainable development and low-carbon transition objectives across different contexts.
#### Individual Research Project
This module enables you to undertake original research into a specific issue related to your MSc programme under the guidance \
of an academic supervisor. You will be supported to work independently to design and implement a complex project from start \
#### Environmental Data Acquisition and Analysis
This module will enable you to develop advanced skills for the acquisition, manipulation, analysis and presentation of environmental data sets. Lectures and practical sessions (including fieldwork, laboratory work and computer-based practicals) are used to provide training in data collection and recording techniques and analysis methods including statistical and geospatial analysis. Understanding is reinforced through problem-solving exercises. Emphasis is given to actionable data for environmental management, nature recovery and sustainability projects and communication of complex scientific information in concise and accessible formats.
#### Natural Capital and Ecosystem Services
Natural capital assets (water, soils, air, geology and all living things) and the ecosystem services we derive from them underpin sustainable socio-economic development and human wellbeing. This module provides conceptual and practical understanding of natural capital and ecosystem services. It explores their role in addressing societal changes through Nature-based Solutions that involve the protection, sustainable management and restoration of ecosystems. It will draw on real-world examples that may include but are not limited to: blue carbon, freshwater, estuarine and coastal ecosystem services, voluntary carbon markets, biodiversity uplift and net gain, pollution reduction, natural flood management, community resilience and cultural ecosystem services.
#### Environmental Restoration and Rewilding
This module provides the key knowledge and understanding to support the development of landscape restoration and rewilding strategies. It will explore the key concepts, principles and practice of restoration and rewilding from an environmental science perspective, drawing on different environmental contexts across freshwater, terrestrial, estuarine and coastal environments. Examples will emphasise the connectivity between ecosystem restoration, climate change mitigation and adaptation and pollution mitigation. It will explore national and international policy, legislative and economic drivers and challenges associated with monitoring and evaluation of restoration and rewilding projects.
#### Environmental Values and Sustainability Science
The module examines environmental values in the context of unprecedented human impacts on the planet. It critically analyses how sustainability sciences understand and address complex human-environment interactions. It provides in-depth understanding of how ethical values affect uses of, and contests over, a range of market and non-market practices of environmental valuation. Through case studies, lectures, and workshops, the module offers students advanced cross-disciplinary training at the intersection of science, values, and policies aimed at both equity and environmental sustainability.
### Compulsory/Core Elective modules
#### Overseas field trip: Conservation and Habitat Restoration
You will learn the importance of tropical rainforest conservation and in particular the role of habitat restoration in maintaining and improving ecosystem services. You will learn a range of methods for collecting data through field surveys, specifically in relation to ongoing habitat restoration. You will learn strategies for ecosystem-based restoration, how restoration can alleviate impacts of climate change and the biodiversity crisis, and how to address socio-economic challenges brought about by habitat restoration to local communities. You will be equipped with knowledge including how to identify restoration opportunities, how to carry out rapid site assessments, and strategies for mitigating any negative impacts of restoration. The field course will include talks from relevant researchers, stakeholders, and policy makers all of whom are involved with local restoration initiatives. Your activities will include group field exercises, group-based mini-projects and analysis as well as the presentation of resulting data, both through write-ups and oral presentations.
#### Nature-based Solutions in Practice
This module deepens understanding of the science and practical implementation of Nature-based Solutions and connects students with the sustainability sector practitioner/stakeholder community. The module explores how scientific advances and policy developments are translated into practice, and the challenges associated with this. Students engage with a range of practitioners and stakeholder groups including government organisations, environmental consultancies and charities to gain a broader perspective of Nature-based Solutions, develop a network of contacts and reflect on their knowledge and skills.

### Research project
**Examples of recent research projects include:**
- Quantifying vegetation dynamics and carbon storage in rewilded landscapes.
- Assessing physical habitat condition in rivers and estuaries for Biodiversity Net Gain.
- Developing new methods for monitoring and assessing recovery and restoration success in terrestrial, freshwater or coastal ecosystems.
- Impacts of stressors, such as pollution, trawling, dredging and climate change, on coastal biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and ecosystem services.
- Responding to the intersecting risks of climate change and coastal pollution.
## Teaching
Teaching comprises a mixture of formal lectures, field trips, laboratory and computer practicals, small group seminars, workshops, and one-to-one supervision meetings.
If you choose to study part-time, the number of modules you take is reduced per semester. The full number of modules you need to complete the programme will be spread over two academic years.
In the 2024 Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES), 100% of our students agreed staff were good at explaining things and enthusiastic about what they were teaching. 93% of students agreed their research skills had developed during their course and 87% felt better prepared for a future career as a result of their course.

Dr Tom Lawerence's research focuses on fluvial, estuarine, and coastal systems and their response to changing conditions influenced by pollution, contamination, or climate-driven factors. He uses a combination of field and lab-based analysis tools, with large imaging datasets, pairing 'wet' geography with digital geography. The English language requirements for our programmes are indicated by English bands, and therefore the specific test and score acceptable is based on the band assigned to the academic department within which your chosen course of study is administered. Note that for some academic departments there are programmes with non-standard English language requirements.
