## What you'll study
Throughout the programme, you’ll build a strong foundation in programming, machine learning, and data analysis - supported by expert teaching and hands-on learning across essential AI topics. With carefully tailored content and dedicated support, we’ve created a learning experience that makes complex concepts accessible.
You’ll start by developing core coding skills through Python programming for AI, no prior experience required. Modules in data analytics and statistics will build your confidence in handling, visualising, and interpreting data, providing the analytical backbone for more advanced AI work. Alongside technical training, you’ll engage with the ethical and societal implications of AI, learning how to create responsible and trustworthy AI solutions.
As the programme progresses, you’ll delve into key areas such as machine learning, deep learning, and neural networks, gaining practical expertise in advanced models used in real-world applications like image and speech recognition. You’ll also explore how AI is transforming industries, helping you identify where your skills can have the most impact.
Throughout the programme, regular lab sessions, tutorials, and applied exercises will ensure that theory is continually reinforced by practice. You’ll put your skills to the test through real-world use cases and a final MSc project applying AI to an area of your choosing, giving you the opportunity to specialise, innovate, and showcase your capabilities.
### Structure
- Seven compulsory modules.
- Compulsory final year project.
### Compulsory/Core modules
#### Risk and Decision-Making for Data Science and AI
This module provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges of risk assessment, prediction and decision-making covering public health and medicine, the law, government strategy, transport safety and consumer protection. Students will learn how to see through much of the confusion spoken about risk in public discourse, and will be provided with methods and tools for improved risk assessment that can be directly applied for personal, group, and strategic decision-making. The module also directly addresses the limitations of big data and machine learning for solving decision and risk problems.
#### Principles of Machine Learning
Principles of Machine Learning covers the fundamental concepts, methodology and practical tools necessary to understand, build and assess data-driven models to describe real-world systems and predict their behaviour. We will follow the standard machine learning taxonomy to organise problems and techniques into well-defined families (supervised and unsupervised learning) and subfamilies. We will pay particular attention to the methodology that we need to use to avoid and identify common pitfalls. State-of-the-art models and the latest developments on model deployment will be discussed.
#### Ethics, Regulation and Law in Advanced Digital Information Processing and Decision Making
This module takes a practical approach to the coverage of ethics in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. It sees ethical considerations as part of a spectrum of concerns, including ethics, but extending through regulation and legal compliance as formal expressions of what is and is not ethical. It considers examples of the kinds of issues that arise in existing systems, and uses the UK Government's Ethical Framework as an example of how to embed considerations of ethics into business processes.
#### Applications of Artificial Intelligence
No module detail available
#### Applications of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is transforming businesses, organisations and the society. This module explores how AI is changing economic sectors such as the healthcare, finance, media, technology and environment sectors. You will use statistical, computational, machine learning and ethical principles to analyse real-world examples of AI applications and devise novel AI products and services to solve real-world problems. The practical orientation of the module Applications of Artificial Intelligence will equip you with skills and abilities needed to succeed as professionals in today¿s AI world.
#### Deep Learning and Neural Networks with Applications
No module detail available
#### Deep Learning and Neural Networks with Applications
Deep Learning and Neural Networks with Applications develops a strong foundational and practical knowledge of Neural Networks and Deep Learning solutions. Using different Python frameworks, you will analyse and implement Deep Learning architectures for diverse sets of problems, notably vision and sequence processing. Discussions on architectural choices from a statistical and computational point of view will provide you with a wider understanding of Deep Learning architectures and their suitability for different applications. The module also covers transfer learning approaches, generative models, and transformer models, including the use of open-source services and large language models. One of the main skills that you will develop is the ability to critically analyse Deep Learning choices and the practical development of Deep Learning solutions for a given problem.

### Assessment
- 67% Modules
- 33% Research project
- Modules are assessed through a combination of coursework and written examinations.
- You will undertake a large project where you will demonstrate AI skills in an applied scenario.
### Research project
Individual projects are undertaken during the summer months, under the supervision of an academic member of staff, with whom there are weekly consultancy meetings. These are used for students to report on their progress, discuss research design, and plan their future work.
The Projects Coordinator also runs taught sessions to support the project module. A number of industrial-linked projects are offered each year, which students can apply for.
## Teaching
- This programme has been developed and is taught by experts in their fields.
- Teaching for all modules includes a combination of lectures, seminars practical labs and a virtual learning environment.
- You will be assigned an Academic Advisor who will guide you in both academic and pastoral matters throughout your time at Queen Mary

## Career paths
Artificial intelligence continues to be one of the fastest-growing fields in the global economy, with significant demand for skilled professionals. A recent report from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport highlights over 110,000 vacancies in AI and data science roles, with the majority of organisations struggling to recruit talent. This MSc is designed to address that critical skills gap, empowering graduates from non-STEM backgrounds to step confidently into high-growth careers.
With the UK government investing heavily in AI infrastructure and conversion course funding, graduates will be entering a high-demand job market both in the UK and internationally. Practical AI expertise is increasingly valued by employers, with recent research from the Oxford Internet Institute showing that AI skills attract a 23% wage premium rising to 36% in science, engineering, and tech roles. This is notably higher than the wage premium associated with formal qualifications such as Master’s degrees (13%) and even PhDs (33%).
Queen Mary [Careers and Enterprise](https://www.qmul.ac.uk/careers/ "https://www.qmul.ac.uk/careers/") offers a range of tailored support and resources for current students and recent graduates, from refining your CV and exploring your options, to finding part time roles, work experience and graduate opportunities.
