What you'll study

This course has a major focus on international and comparative issues, and on the importance of legal principles, rules and laws underlying business and commercial relationships. You will be equipped with a thorough understanding of key aspects of commercial law from multiple perspectives. The programme will allow you to develop an in-depth understanding and explore transnational approaches to resolving commercial problems.

Gain the ability to assess critically and comment upon the current state of the law from an international and transnational perspective. You will be able to conduct advanced research in this area of law.

You will stay connected to both universities throughout the 16-month programme. Lecturers from both universities will be available to you throughout your studies, whether you are in Singapore or in London.

Dissertation

You will complete a 12,000-word dissertation. Previous topics include:

Teaching

Starting in January, you will spend your first semesters studying at Queen Mary and at the end of August, you will start your studies at SMU in Singapore. This programme is taught in English at both institutions.

You will be taught with a mixture of formal lectures and small group seminars. The seminars are designed to generate informed discussion around set topics, and may involve student presentations and group exercises as well as open discussion.

You will have a team of advisers to support you, including the LLM and Research Directors, your dissertation supervisor and tutors and your module convenors.

Teaching in London is based at the School of Law's postgraduate centre and the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS), located in Lincoln's Inn Fields. You may also have classes at the Mile End Campus or the University of London's Institute of Advanced Legal Studies or Charterhouse Square.

While based in Singapore, you will study in the School of Law building at Singapore Management University on Armenian Street. Purpose-built over 4.5 hectares of prime Singapore land, SMU’s campus is designed, integrated and constructed in the heart of a fully developed cityscape.

Entry requirements

UK

Degree requirements

A 2:1 or above at undergraduate level in Law or a degree with substantial law content.

Law graduates with a 2:2 honours degree who also have other legal qualifications and/or substantial professional legal experience may also qualify.

Other routes

Non-law graduates with a minimum second class honours degree, that have also obtained a Merit (or 60 per cent) in the Common Professional Examination (CPE) or Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) recognised by the UK professional bodies, may also qualify. Non-law graduates may also be considered on the basis of exceptional professional experience (of at least five years) in a legal area or an area directly related to their programme of study.

Additional information

All applications for the Dual LLM in Commercial Law (London and Singapore) should be made directly to Queen Mary University London.

Applicants who satisfy Queen Mary's admissions criteria are shortlisted. Queen Mary will pass on shortlisted applications directly to SMU admissions for the next stage of the admission process.

Applicants will then go through the Singapore Management University's admissions process. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to take a short test and attend a selection interview with a selector from SMU. The interview and test can be done face-to-face or remotely online if required.

Zambia\ We normally consider the following qualifications for entry to our postgraduate taught programmes: Masters Degree from a recognised institution.\ \ UK 1st class degree: 75%; or GPA 3.7 out of 4.0\ UK 2:1 degree: 65%; or GPA 3.0 out of 4.0\ UK 2:2 degree: 55%; or GPA 2.4 out of 4.0

Zimbabwe\ We normally consider the following qualifications for entry to our postgraduate taught programmes: Bachelor Degree (minimum 4 years) or Bachelor Honours degree from a recognised institution.\ \ UK 1st class degree: 75%\ UK 2:1 degree: 65%\ UK 2:2 degree: 60%

English language requirements

The English language requirements for our programmes are normally indicated by an English band assigned to the academic department within which your chosen course of study is administered. However, all programmes in this school have non-standard English language requirements.\  \ The English Language requirements for entry to postgraduate taught programmes in this School is the following:\  \ IELTS (Academic) minimum score 7.0 overall with 6.5 in Writing and 6.0 in Listening, Reading and Speaking\  \ We accept a range of English tests and qualifications for you to demonstrate your level of English Language proficiency.
