What you'll study

You will be offered an extensive choice of modules in commercial law, which can lead to specialist LLMs in the following areas:

If you opt to take a specialism, you’ll have 60 credits of 'free-choice' modules, which can be from any legal field outside your specialism.

Courses are taught in English by Queen Mary faculty, in collaboration with distinguished guest lecturers. The programme and our student community are supported by alumni and several local partnerships.

For many students, improving their legal English is a vital part of undertaking an LLM. We therefore run an in-sessional academic and legal English language support programme alongside our LLM course. It is an opportunity to focus on your academic writing, research methodology, and critical and analytical skills.

We also offer Introduction to Common Law classes at the start of each semester, which provide valuable insights, particularly if you come from a civil law jurisdiction.

Additional costs

Depending on your module choices, you may incur some additional costs to cover course textbooks, a Navigo travelcard (the Parisian equivalent of London’s Oyster card) and social activities.

It may be necessary to include English translations of documents with your application.

Structure

The Paris LLM programme starts in January and September each year, with exam periods in January and July each year.

You will take 180 credits in total. 30-credits of this can be an optional dissertation of 10,000 words.

Dissertation

All Paris LLM students have the option to complete a 30-credit dissertation in English of 10,000 words. You’ll have a personal dissertation supervisor.

Teaching

You’ll study in a diverse, high-calibre classroom environment and benefit from the international outlook and experiences of your lecturers and peers.

You’ll be taught through a variety of methods, including traditional and interactive lectures, small group teaching, tutorials and online learning.

This innovative LLM is taught in intensive module blocks, allowing you to incorporate other elements – such as an internship – into your time on the course. You’ll generally be taught in intensive daytime, evening or occasional Saturday classes.

Should you undertake an internship alongside your studies, you’ll also learn through direct experience. This will introduce you to the expectations of the working environment, where you will apply your legal skills.

Mary Mitsi

Mary is a Senior Lecturer in Commercial Law and International Arbitration. She is the Director for Executive Education at the Queen Mary Centre for Commercial Law Studies contributing to the training of industry professionals and judges. Mary teaches international commercial arbitration, and investment arbitration. Her publications include the monograph on 'The decision-making process of Investor-State Arbitration Tribunals' (Kluwer Law International 2019).

This degree is taught at the University of London Institute in Paris (ULIP), in premises shared with the British Council in central Paris, a short walk from the Champs-Elysées and close to the political and educational centres of French life. Entry requirements

UK

Degree requirements

A 2:1 or above at undergraduate level in Law or a degree with substantial law content.

Law graduates with a 2:2 honours degree who also have other legal qualifications and/or substantial professional legal experience may also qualify.

Other routes

Non-law graduates with a minimum second class honours degree, that have also obtained a Merit (or 60 per cent) in the Common Professional Examination (CPE) or Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) recognised by the UK professional bodies, may also qualify. Non-law graduates may also be considered on the basis of exceptional professional experience (of at least five years) in a legal area or an area directly related to their programme of study.

Important note: To join the programme, applicants must allow enough time to meet both the academic and English language (if applicable) entry requirements before the start of your studies, and allow enough time to organise a visa (if applicable). Applications are considered on a rolling basis and we aim to respond within two to four weeks.

English language requirements

The English language requirements for our programmes are normally indicated by an English band assigned to the academic department within which your chosen course of study is administered. However, all programmes in this school have non-standard English language requirements.\  \ The English Language requirements for entry to postgraduate taught programmes in this School is the following:\  \ IELTS (Academic) minimum score 7.0 overall with 6.5 in Writing and 6.0 in Listening, Reading and Speaking\  \ We accept a range of English tests and qualifications for you to demonstrate your level of English Language proficiency. See programmes with non-standard English language requirements for all accepted English tests that we deem equivalent to these IELTS scores.
