What you'll study

This online MSc gives you a thorough grounding in cancer sciences with the opportunity to specialise in one of three streams, which means you can align your studies with your interests and career aspirations.

Featuring research-led and research-informed content delivered by leading experts in cancer research, you’ll be exposed to the latest advancements and innovations in the field. You’ll gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, that will equip you for a career in academia, clinical settings, or the biotech/biopharma industry.

The programme can be studied either full-time or part-time via distance learning through our virtual learning platform, supported by our outstanding digital education team.

Content is chunked to support flexible online study across multiple time windows. You will progress through interactive lecture videos, case studies, lab simulations, and forum discussions to build your knowledge and skills, supported throughout by globally renowned experts in the field.

You can choose between laboratory-based or non-lab-based pathways depending on your interest and career goals:

Depending on which pathway you choose, you’ll complete a three-month dissertation or lab project under the guidance of one of our academics.

This programme is delivered by the Barts Cancer Institute, part of the  Cancer Research UK City of London Centre

Structure

The diagram below outlines the compulsory and elective modules in each stream Cancer Sciences streams diagram [PDF 72KB]:

Compulsory/Core modules

Cancer Biology

This module covers cell and molecular biology relevant to cancer, including: - The processes of carcinogenesis and DNA damage - The key cellular and molecular processes affected in tumour development - Key proteins and pathways regulating cell proliferation and cell death - A broader concept of malignancy and its nvironment - Processes involved in invasion and metastasis.

Research Methods

The module covers the techniques and knowledge needed to critically appraise published research, and carry out a piece of original research. Topics include: - How to review and interpret published research - How to structure and write a research paper or lab write up - Learn and use a range of statistical methodology - The ethical and legislative framework in which research is undertaken - Training in data preparation and presentation

Elective modules

Biological Therapies

This module will provide an understanding of the science behind the biological therapies of cancer, and an up-to-date review of the current status of preclinical and clinical trials. The module will also provide an insight into the ways that laboratory research is translated into clinical trials. By the end of the module you will be able to: Understand the basis of biological therapy of cancer; Understand the role of non-malignant cells and mediators in cancer growth and progression

Assessment

As an online learner, assessments will be either coursework submitted via our virtual learning environment or through recorded or live online presentations. Assessment of individual modules varies and is designed to give you a chance to develop a broad range of strengths. Throughout the course, there are opportunities for formative feedback, so you can see what is expected before you submit summative work.

Dissertation

If you register as an MSc student, you will also be assessed on a supervised 10,000-word dissertation or 5,000-word laboratory project, depending on which pathway you choose. Alongside your written submission, you will give an oral presentation and answer questions about your research – excellent practice for subsequent interviews!

The dissertation or lab project is typically carried out full-time over 12 weeks. Dissertations involve regular supervision from one of our academics, and for projects, you will be embedded within one of our research centres. If you are a part-time student, there may be some flexibility to arrange part-time dissertations or projects, and projects can also be arranged with your employer or at a local research institution, if that is more pragmatic.

Teaching

You will primarily be studying asynchronously via our Virtual Learning Environment, studying in your own time and pace with purposefully designed digital learning materials. There will be live sessions where you can meet academics and fellow students.

Dissertations and Lab Projects will be supervised by a Barts Cancer Institute (BCI) researcher.

Choose to study full-time, part-time, starting in January or September, so you can choose the option that works best for you.  If you study part-time, the modules you’ll need to complete the programme will be spread over two years.

We take pride in the nurturing relationship we have with our students. You’ll be assigned an Academic Mentor, who will guide you in both academic and pastoral matters throughout your time at Queen Mary.
