What is Intra EU Mobility?

According to EU directive 2016/801, holders of student residence permits issued in another EU country (except Ireland and Denmark) may, in some cases, study in the Netherlands without requesting a seperate permit. Leiden University is required to notify the Dutch immigration department (IND) of any students joining us via Intra EU Mobility.

Find out below if you are eligible for Intra EU Mobility and the step to take.

Who is eligible for Intra EU Mobility?

You are eligible for Intra EU Mobility if you meet all the following conditions:

*Will your EU permit expire before the end of your studies at Leiden University? You must arrange an extension of your EU permit before applying for Intra EU Mobility via Leiden University.

Steps to take

  1. Meet your conditions

We can only notify the IND that you are joining us via Intra EU Mobility once you have met your admission conditions (if applicable).

Where to find your conditions

How and when to meet your conditions

On the Meet your admission conditions page you can find out how and when to meet your conditions, and what to do if you cannot meet your conditions on time.

Not yet admitted?

Check the admission and application procedures.

  1. Await your invitation mail

This will invite you to start your residence permit application in the uSis visa portal.

You will be asked to upload the following documents in the uSis visa portal.

To apply for Intra EU Mobility via Leiden University, you must meet the same financial requirements as other students applying for a student residence permit.

Carefully read the information on the Proof of funds page, then upload the required items in the uSis visa portal.

Check criteria carefully!\ Make sure your proof of funds documents meet allthe stipulated criteria! Missing or incorrect documents will significantly slow down the processing of your application.

  1. Upload other documents for Intra EU Mobility

Upload the following additional documents on the Otherscreen of the uSis visa portal:

After you submit your application, Leiden University will check all information and documents are in order. If anything is missing or incorrect, you will be notified via uSis. Check your emails and uSis notifications frequently and take action immediately if needed.

Priority for students requiring entry visas

In the period June to August, Leiden University receives a large number of visa/residence permit applications. As a result, we must prioritise applications from students who need a visa to enter the country. This means it may take us 6 to 8 weeks to process your Intra EU Mobility application. Thank you for your understanding.

  1. Await letter from Dutch immigration department

Once your application has been checked by Leiden University, we will notify the Dutch immigration department (IND) of your request for Intra EU Mobility.

Once the IND approves your request, they will notify Leiden University. We will then send you a copy of the IND approval letter by email. This letter, in combination with your EU residence permit, serves as proof that you have legal residency in the Netherlands.

You will also need your IND approval letter when registering at a Dutch town hall after arrival - see Step 9. below.

  1. After arrival: optional sticker in passport

You do not require, and will not receive, a new residence permit. However, if you specifically want a ‘residence endorsement sticker’ in your passport, you can request one directly from the IND. To arrange this, make an appointment at the IND office in The Hague.

Note: to make your appointment you will need your V-number (immigration department reference number). You can find this on the IND approval letter you received by email from Leiden University - see Step 7. above. Can't find or didn't receive the letter? Contact Leiden University:

Make sure to complete all the procedures that are relevant to you as soon as possible after arrival.
