Visas and residence permits

Do I need a visa or residence permit?

Select your nationality or situation below to find out if you need a (new) visa or residence permit and the steps you must take.

EU, EEA and Swiss nationals

Nationals of Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, South Korea, USA, UK, Vatican City

Staying less than 90 days?

You do not need a visa or residence permit. 

Staying longer than 90 days?

You will need a residence permit only. See: Steps to take - residence permit only. You do not need an entry visa (MVV), which means you do not need to visit a Dutch embassy before travelling to the Netherlands.

Exceptions:

All other nationalities

Staying less than 90 days?

A short-stay Schengen visa might be required. Check on the immigration department (IND) website if this applies to you.

Staying longer than 90 days?

You will need an entry visa (MVV) and residence permit. See: Steps to take - visa and residence permit.

Exceptions:

Dutch residence permit holders

Dutch student residence permit obtained via another educational institution?

Dutch residence permit issued for a purpose other than study (e.g. employment, orientation year, family)?

Already studying at Leiden University and need to extend your student residence permit?

Other procedures and deadlines apply. Visit the student website for information on extending your stay.

Deadline

The deadline for submitting your visa/residence permit application and paying the required fee is:

Applying for a visa/residence permit for accompanying family members? Contact Leiden University before 15 April (Sept start) or 15 Sept (Feb start) for info on additional requirements. Then apply by the earlier deadline of 1 May (Sept start) or 1 Oct (Feb start).
