A student city with character

Leiden University has contributed to the city’s unique atmosphere for over 400 years. The historical centre is full of student associations and accommodation, as well as university buildings. This is place to be if you want to relax or socialise. The city is also a large open-air museum, with windmills, churches, city gates, and ancient canals. Don’t miss “Leidens Ontzet” on 2 and 3 October, a festive two-day event that celebrates the relief of the city from Spanish rule.

Cultural assets, academic traditions

Ranging from artworks by Leiden’s masters to a journey through the human body: Leiden’s museums offer a varied menu. Several of them also offer internships to students of the international bachelor's programme Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology.

Small-scale and central

Leiden is a winning combination of small and fun, yet big in character. Thanks to its compact layout, it’s never more than a short bike ride from your accommodation to the University. It’s also centrally located among the Netherlands’ main cities. You can cycle to the beach in 30 minutes, while Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam can all be reached by train in 30 minutes.
