## Introduction

We care about your professional future. Finding a fulfilling job can be challenging because it requires a good understanding of who you are, what the labor market offers and how to successfully apply for jobs. UGent has taken several initiatives to support you in this search. This includes an information portal, workshop offer and career coaching. As you start thinking about your next career step we encourage you to go from our online offer to more specific training and coaching.  \

## Learning track

The [PhD career hub](https://ufora.ugent.be/d2l/le/discovery/view/course/676452) is a learning track designed to support PhDs and postdoc researchers in preparing their next career step. It offers step-by-step directions to guide you in your journey, whether you're pursuing an academic career or a career beyond academia.

As your one-stop destination for career development, we provide the guidance, insights, and resources you need to take informed, confident steps beyond the postdoc phase—whether you see yourself continuing in academia, moving into industry, or charting an entirely new path.

## Career coaching

Do you have questions about your research job, are you having difficulties or are you thinking about your next career move? **Any reseacher** can request one-on-one career coaching.

**What to expect**

- Career coaching is **confidential**. Nothing you say during these sessions is passed on to anyone else
- A career coach can help you get a better understanding of your interests, competences, motivations and values
- A career coach can help you revise your CV and prepare for a job interview
- A career coach can support you in choosing between an academic career and a job outside of academic research
- A career coach is here to listen to what you are struggling with and can offer assistance to overcome difficulties
- A career coach helps with perfectionism, fear of failure, burn-out, imposter thoughts, ...

**What not to expect**

- A career coach will not tell you which job you should pursue and can't provide an exhaustive overview of the job market
- A career coach is not a therapist. If necessary the career coach will refer you to a psychologist

## The Flemish job portal for doctorate holders

The [PhD Talent Pool Flanders](https://phd-talents-be.jobteaser.com/en/users/sign_in) is a new Flemish recruitment platform designed to better and faster align the supply and demand for PhD talent. The platform offers both academic and non-academic jobs and also lists numerous \
events that are relevant to PhD degree holders who are looking for a job. \

## Future job events

### NEW: Job shadowing for PhD candidates and postdocs

PhD candidates and postdocs who engage in job shadowing gain insight into the work routine of a (PhD) professional, his/her role(s) and responsibilities. Job shadowing provides a better (and nuanced) understanding of the skills and competences needed to succeed and thrive in a particular job. In short, it allows to ‘test-drive’ a career.

### Interuniversity job market for young researchers

Since 2012, the Ghent University's Doctoral Schools have been a partner in the successful [Afstudeerbeurs](http://afstudeerbeurs.augent.be/) hosted by [AUGent](http://www.augent.be/). As of 2020 they joined forces with colleagues in the other Flemish universities to co-organise the [Interuniversity Job Market for Young Researchers](https://jobmarketforyoungresearchers.be/en/phd-students). Together we scout for companies interested in hiring PhDs, offer CV analysis and speed career coaching as well as facilitate relevant career orientation workshops for PhD candidates and PhD degree holders.
