# Starting test, positioning test and entrance examinations

## Starting tests
Many study programmes offer a positioning test, some programmes have a **starting test** (‘starttoets’), for these programmaes you must take part in the test in order to enrol.\
Both type of tests consist of multiple choice questions and test your **mathematical and scientific skills** **and knowledge** in relation to the expected entry level of the specific bachelor’s programme. Based on your results, you will be able to compare your skills and knowledge with other participants.
Note: all tests are **available in Dutch only**. All **bachelor’s programmes** at Ghent University are taught in Dutch.
Participation in a starting test is **mandatory** for the following bachelor’s programmes:
- Biochemistry and biotechnology
- Biology
- Biomedical sciences
- Bio-engineering sciences
- Chemistry
- Engineering sciences: architecture
- Engineering sciences
- Geography and geomatics
- Geology
- Industrial engineer: life sciences
- Industrial sciences
- Mathematics
- Pharmaceutical sciences
- Physics and astronomy
Regardless of your result on the positioning test, you can enroll in the program. However, if you do not pass the test, you will have to complete a **mandatory remedial course**. This course too**is available in Dutch only**.
Timely [registration](https://www.ijkingstoets.be/) is **mandatory**. Registrations are open from January 15 until June 15 (session 1) or until August 15 (session 2).
## Positioning tests
Participation in a positioning test ('ijkingstoets') is **optional** but highly recommended for the following bachelor's programmes:
- Business engineering
- Business economics
- Computer science
- Economics
- Rehabilitation sciences and physical therapy
Timely [registration](https://www.ijkingstoets.be/) is **mandatory**. Registrations are open from January 15 until June 15.
## Entrance examinations
**Mandatory** for medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine.
If you wish to study medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine, you must pass (and be favourably ranked) for the entrance exam. \
These tests are **available in Dutch only**, since Dutch is also the language of instruction of these programmes.
