This is a core module for Animal Science - Equine students and aims to provide an introduction to the many facets of the Equine Industry that exist both in Ireland and on a global scale. Students will learn about the development of the horse in Ireland, its significance for the Irish people and the contribution made by the Equine Industry to Ireland's economy. The module will focus primarily on the Thoroughbred and Sport Horse industries. The module also includes a component on animal welfare, addressing the problems that face the equine industries globally as they seek to become sustainable. The module will incorporate three field trips related to the equine industries along the themes of - equine welfare, Thoroughbred industry, Sport horse industry. The field trip reports will comprise components of continuous assessment throughout the module. The module will also include a self-directed in-course project on a subject related to the equine industry. All aspects of the module will be examined in a end of trimester written exam.

### What will I learn?

###### Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to: Discuss the development of the horse in Ireland and its importance in Irish society; Explain the extent to which the Equine Industry in Ireland contributes to our economy; Discuss the role of support organisations for the Irish Sport Horse and Thoroughbred industries; List and describe the function and importance of ancillary organisations associated with the equine industry in Ireland; Describe marketing processes; Be able to recognise the impacts of the industry on animal welfare and sustainability of the industry.

Field trip reports
• feedback will be given to students as a group in class, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the responses given in the field trip assessments. There are 3 field trip assessments so this will provide students the opportunity to improve on their report submissions
Research project
• feedback will be given to students as a group during peer-discussions on their chosen topic. This will provide students the opportunity to improve on their project submissions.
