This module builds upon the foundation in Chinese language provided in Chinese Language Experience I. \ The aims are to:\ 1. Develop students’ communicative competence and accuracy in written Chinese with guided study using web-based and multi-media materials. \ 2. Encourage students to read expository and narrative articles that are written using common vocabulary.\ 3. Provide students a further introduction to the sentence structure and core vocabulary of Chinese.\ 4. Provide students instructions on how to improve basic Chinese writing skills. \

What will I learn?

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Understand simple texts, standardized messages, phrases or expressions on topics such as daily routines, campus life, learning routines.\
  2. Write simple, fixed expressions and short sentences on topics given above.\
  3. Build up a vocabulary of 500 words.\
  4. Achieve HSK level 2.\ \

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
  1. Grammar-translation: Learning largely involves translation to and from the target language. Students are expected to memorize grammar rules and vocabulary through development of translation skills. \
  2. Peer and group work: Students are expected to work in small groups. Students are encouraged to help and correct each\ other in a cooperative spirit. Teachers will assist when it is absolutely necessary.\

Learning Requirements:\

In order to take this module, students should have achieved the learning outcomes of CHN10010 Chinese Language Experience I, which is equivalent to HSK Level 1.

Learning Exclusions:\

Students who are native Mandarin speakers are not eligible to take this module as an elective. \ \ The lecturer reserves the right to assess the language competence of all students. Students whose competence is incompatible with the level of their chosen elective module will be advised to transfer to a more appropriate language module.\
