Our Medicine curriculum is patient-centred and continually adapts to the needs of society and developments in medical knowledge. You’ll learn from world-class educators and patients in state-of-the art facilities.
The main hospitals associated with our programme are St Vincent’s University Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. In addition there are more than 20 other training hospitals and more than 100 primary care practices that facilitate your learning. You will also benefit from a diverse range of exciting international placement opportunities.
Applications will only be considered from applicants who have successfully completed the UCD Access to Science, Engineering & Agriculture course.
The purpose of this pathway to medicine is to provide an access route to those who have not yet had the opportunity to attend university. Therefore, those without a Level 8 degree will be prioritised.

How old do I have to be?
If you are at least 23 years of age on 1 January of the year you want to enter, you can apply on grounds of mature years.
To enter in September 2026, you must have been born on or before 1 January 2003.
What is the closing date?
Apply by 1 February. Late applications will not be considered on grounds of mature years.

What documents do I need to send to CAO?
You must post the following documentation to CAO, Tower House, Eglinton Street, Galway:
- Results, Certificates or other evidence of any qualifications that you have mentioned in your online CAO application.
Remember to include your CAO application number on all supporting documents that you send to CAO.
Please note that documents should be with CAO no later than 15 February. Documents received after this date may not be available to us in time for assessment.
What is HPAT-Ireland?
The HPAT-Ireland score is a mandatory criterion to be used as part of the selection process. The assessment is designed to allow you to demonstrate your logical reasoning and problem solving skills as well as non-verbal reasoning and the ability to understand the thoughts, behaviour and/or intentions of people and will last a minimum of 2½ hours. HPAT-Ireland results can be used for application to a medical school for 1 year, therefore if a candidate takes the test in 2025, the result can be used for admission in 2025 only.
- HPAT Ireland Online Test Window: 14 February - 17 February 2025.
The test will be conducted online via remote proctoring and test takers will select a day & time that suits them to sit the test.\ Please ensure that you read the HPAT-Ireland information carefully before making your application.
How will my application be assessed?
You must meet the following minimum requirements:

| Learning Journal: (750 words) | You will be invited to submit a 750 word Learning Journal detailing your reflections of your learning on the UCD Access course. The Learning Journal will explore your understanding, perception, commitment to study and ideas about your progression route to a six year undergraduate Medicine degree programme. | 20% |
| HPAT Ireland | As a guide a minimum HPAT score: 150 is expected. Note: HPAT Ireland score from 2025 is valid for entry in 2025 only. | 30% |
Places will be allocated on a competitive basis. All applicants who meet the minimum requirements above will be ranked on a total score which is weighted as shown above. Any canvassing, or failure to mention a previous degree (of any level) on your CAO form, will automatically disqualify the applicant.
Is there an interview?
No. The offers for Medicine are made on the basis of the total ranked score as outlined above.
When will I know the decision on my application?
Assessment of mature applications will take place when the Access results are known.
Official offers will issue via CAO in early July and must be accepted within a week.
