This module provides an introduction to China, improving students' understanding and knowledge of China with a particular focus on Chinese culture. The topics covered include: ancient Chinese history, philosophy, religion, language, tea and food culture, festivals, calligraphy and painting, music, traditional medicine, sports and martial arts. Various workshops are organised to promote students’ cultural understanding through their own experiences, such as learning Chinese business etiquette and table manners in a Chinese restaurant, practising Chinese calligraphy and painting with Chinese artists, practising Chinese martial arts with a Taiji master and learning to play a simple piece of music using Chinese musical instruments. Guest speakers are invited to share their expertise with students in the relevant areas of the course.

### What will I learn?
###### Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this module students should have developed their knowledge of China, in particular in the various aspects of Chinese culture. \
\
Upon successful completion of this module students should be able to:\
\
1. Demonstrate understanding on key claims of Chinese philosophies introduced in the module.\
2. Identify implications of these philosophies in both traditional and modern contexts of family value, social life and popular culture in China. \
3. Present an analysis of Chinese cultural elements in comparison with students’ own cultural environment. \
4. Reflect on students’ own cultural and disciplinary experience and enhance the understanding of topics discussed from various perspectives.\

###### Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module requires a high level of student participation. Various learning and teaching methods are listed below. \
\
• Students will attend lectures during which key contents are covered and topics of discussion are assigned.\
• Students are required to read assigned literature prior to lectures and join discussions. \
• Screening sessions of films and documentaries will provide students with case studies of Chinese culture in various settings. \
• Guest speakers are invited to present his/her knowledge and experience on certain aspect of Chinese culture. Various workshops will be organised to provide hands-on experience of Chinese culture.\
• Students are expected to carry out online discussion and exchange of opinions on course contents or other relevant topics through the platform of VLE.\
