# Problem of the Month

**Source**: https://cemc.uwaterloo.ca/resources/potm
**Parent**: https://cemc.uwaterloo.ca/

The Problem of the Month is intended to challenge enthusiastic high school mathematics students. Most problems are designed with the assumption that students attempting them have a solid understanding of Grade 11 math, but some problems may still be of interest to younger motivated students.

## Current Problem

Below you will find the monthly problem. The first problem will be posted in September. After that, a new problem will be posted on the first Tuesday of every month. A hint will follow roughly 10 days later, and a solution another 10 days after that.

### Information for Educators

The Problem of the Month is designed to be considerably more difficult than Problem E of [Problem of the Week](https://cemc.uwaterloo.ca/resources/potw). These problems may be useful for students who:

- want to explore something extracurricular;
- would like to seriously prepare for challenging contest questions such as #4 on the [Hypatia](https://cemc.uwaterloo.ca/contests/fgh) Contest, #9 and #10 on the [Euclid](https://cemc.uwaterloo.ca/contests/euclid) Contest, or A6 and B3 on the [Canadian Senior Mathematics Contest](https://cemc.uwaterloo.ca/contests/csimc);
- enjoy a challenge.

### Information for Students

We hope you are challenged by the Problem of the Month! Here a few things to keep in mind:

- Mathematics problems are solved by trying things until you find something that works, and this takes time!
- We expect that even the strongest students will sometimes require several hours, possibly spread over several weeks, to solve these problems completely.
- There may occasionally be a technique or topic that you have not encountered. We encourage you to explore these things on your own, but we will try to make note of such things in the Hint.

We hope these problems will encourage you to think about something new!
