Program Information

Chronic stress is an endemic problem in the United States It is associated with increases in disease and decreases in life expectancy and satisfaction. An understanding of the physiology of the stress response and how it interacts with other physiological and psychological mechanisms and increased knowledge about how to decrease our chronic stress and increase our happiness will substantially aid human flourishing.

The School of Psychology has recently created a minor in the Science of Mental Health and Well-being. Psychology 3000 teaches students about stress physiology and how chronic stress leads to negative effects on our mental and physical health. It also covers positive psychology research for how to reduce chronic stress and increase our overall well-being. In addition to considering the societal aspects of chronic stress covered in a standard section of Psychology 3000, this course will consider the specific cultural differences in how people globally deal with chronic stress and stress reduction. Specifically in southern Italy, it will consider both perception and management of stress in current Italian (European) culture and chronic stress and stress reduction in ancient Mediterranean cultures (viz., Roman and Greek).

This embedded program will be offered in an asynchronous virtual format for the first three weeks of the course. The program includes a two-week excursion to Southern Italy. The travel portion is from June 8 through June 22, 2026.
