So, you've got a new assessment and you're not sure where to start. On the next few pages, we'll look at the conditions for your assessment (due date, submission, etc.) and how to understand the instructions (what you need to do and how you need to do it). We will also learn about what educators want to see in your submission.
First steps

No matter what type of assessment you're given, your first step should always be to read the assessment instructions carefully.
They tell you exactly what you need to do so that the work you submit meets your teacher's expectations.
The assessment instructions will include conditions like:
What you need to submit, that is, the type of assessment.\ For example, it might be a knowledge task, a project task, or a practical task such as a role play.
Where the assessment will take place.\ It might be online, in class, or in your own time and space.\ Practical tasks might require a specific location.
How you should complete the task.\ For example, you might be required to complete every question. If you miss a condition like this and only complete some questions, you will not receive a 'satisfactory' mark.
The instructions will also include important details like: whether it's a group or individual assessment, if there is a time limit, and whether you're allowed to use things like notes, class materials, or the internet.
If you are unsure about anything in the assessment instructions, check your course materials and notes for supporting information.
If you are still unsure, contact your teacher.
Possible assessment conditions
The instructions should also tell you essential information such as:
- how to apply for extensions or special consideration
- how your assessment will be graded\ (e.g. SAT / satisfactory v NYS / not satisfactory)
- what to do if you have an Equitable Learning Plan (ELP).

Questions
- how many need to be answered
- the types of questions (multiple choice, short answer, etc.)
- how many questions must be answered correctly
- the word count range (if applicable) for answering questions (e.g. 50-100 words).
Submission
- how to submit the assessment (e.g. via Canvas)
- if there is a specific file or file type you need to submit (e.g. a completed template, Word doc, PDF, etc.)
- the conditions for resubmission.

- You must answer all questions correctly to be deemed satisfactory in this assessment.
- You will be assessed as satisfactory or not yet satisfactory.
- The task must be completed in 90 minutes.
