The National Institute of Education’s long-standing commitment to holistic and research-informed teacher education underpins the development of educators in both artistic practice and scholarly inquiry. For more than 70 years, NIE has prepared music educators capable of responding to diverse cultural and educational contexts.

Within this framework, the Music major develops professional competencies through instrumental and vocal lessons, ensemble participation, and seminars. Led by accomplished musicians, scholars, and music educators, the programme is distinctive in its coverage of Western Art, Pop and Jazz, Chinese, Malay, and Indian music, with emphasis on both performance and scholarly skills.

The programme culminates in a capstone music project, offering options such as Performance Studies, Music Theory and Musicology, Music Education, and Improvisation.

NIE is ranked #3 in Asia and #8 globally for Education in the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

[### Unique Features](#unique)

NIE’s programme comprises courses on specialised subject knowledge in at least one academic discipline, education and pedagogy courses for effective teaching.

Student teachers can gain international perspectives on education, through our International Practicum, Semester Exchange and Service and Leadership Training programmes.

Altruistic virtues are also infused in our curriculum. For example, our student teachers can reach out and render service to the community through our Group Endeavours in Service Learning (GESL) projects. \

[### Admission Requirements](#admission)

Prospective applicants are required to fulfil both NTU/NIE and MOE requirements. For the MOE requirements, please refer to the link below for more information. For the academic discipline requirements, please see the details outlined below.

All interested applicants, except diploma holders from NAFA or LaSalle, will attend an interview and audition comprising:

-                A solo performance (with accompanist/s where applicable) on an instrument (or voice) of one or two prepared pieces amounting to 3-5 minutes from any genre/style.

-                Musicianship tests which may include

(i)           Aural skills (e.g., singing back a melody that was played)

(ii)         Accompanying/improvising using pitched/unpitched instrument from any musical tradition)

(iii)        Music theory pegged at approximately Grades 5/6 of examination boards (e.g., ABRSM, Trinity)

Applicants are welcome to submit a music portfolio documenting their music/music education/relevant music-industrial experiences. These may include but are not limited to

**Note:** Candidates who do not have documentary evidence of their relevant musical experiences can speak about them during the audition/interview and may be requested to articulate their knowledge or demonstrate the appropriate skills.

**Important Note**

Meeting the minimum requirement for a specific academic subject does not guarantee the allocation of the academic subject.

Allocation of academic subject is dependent on ranking based on student teachers’ qualifications and results (at the discretion of the departments) as well as the availability of vacancies.
