Singapore’s education system is internationally recognised for its excellence, with the National Institute of Education (NIE) playing a central role in shaping high-quality teacher preparation and professional development for more than 70 years. Grounded in strong educational research, NIE equips future educators with deep disciplinary knowledge, analytical rigour, and pedagogical expertise, enabling them to respond thoughtfully to linguistic, social, and educational change in a rapidly evolving world.
Situated within this institutional mission, the Linguistics major offers a rigorous and systematic study of language as a formal system, a cognitive faculty, and a social phenomenon. You will examine the structure and use of language through core areas such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, while also engaging with sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, and language variation and change. The programme equips you with theoretical frameworks and analytical tools to understand how languages are structured, acquired, processed, and used across different contexts.
Through a combination of lectures, tutorials, data analysis, and research-informed inquiry, you will develop strong skills in linguistic analysis, critical thinking, and academic communication. The programme prepares student teachers to apply linguistic knowledge thoughtfully in educational settings, supporting effective language teaching and learning in multilingual and multicultural contexts.
NIE is ranked #3 in Asia and #8 globally for Education in the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
NIE’s programme comprises courses on specialised subject knowledge in at least one academic discipline, education and pedagogy courses for effective teaching.
Student teachers can gain international perspectives on education, through our International Practicum, Semester Exchange and Service and Leadership Training programmes.
Altruistic virtues are also infused in our curriculum. For example, our student teachers can reach out and render service to the community through our Group Endeavours in Service Learning (GESL) projects. \
