Semi-automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) have been distributed throughout Sapienza's premises. More details on this page

Semi-automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) have been distributed throughout Sapienza's premises. They can be used by anyone in the event of an emergency, as they are equipped with a guiding voice, also in English, that indicates each operation to be performed in the event of an emergency.

Sapienza is also training its First Aid Staff (Addetti al Primo Soccorso di Ateneo - APSA) through the 'Basic Life Support Defibrillation' course, making them experts in using such devices.

CARDIOPROTECTION AT SAPIENZA

Sudden cardiac arrest is a major public health problem, responsible for about 50 per cent of all cardiovascular deaths.

A complete lack of responsiveness to any stimulus on the part of the individual and an absence of a pulse are the most visible symptoms.

Data from the American Heart Association, one of the largest scientific cardiological societies, estimate that more than 350000 sudden cardiac arrests occur each year outside of hospital environments, i.e. at home, but especially in the street, at work and in public places and survival is limited to the 10% of cases.

Prompt intervention, i.e. immediate intervention at the onset of loss of consciousness, corresponds to an increased survival rate and a better prognosis in terms of recovery of the functional capacity of all organs and systems: the earlier and more appropriate the intervention, the fewer the consequences of cardiac arrest.

Sapienza has installed more than 40 semi-automatic defibrillators in its premises distributed throughout Rome and Latina. It also certifies its First Aid Staff through the Basic Life Support Defibrillation (BLSD) course, delivered by the Medical Faculty Simulation Centres instructors, and has set up a system for geo-localisation and immediate reach of the installed defibrillators.

INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT IS an External Semiautomatic Defibrillator (AED)?

The semiautomatic external defibrillator (AED) is a life-saving device that, when correctly applied, can recognise an alteration in heart rate rhythm and deliver an electric shock to the heart upon manual impulse from an operator, resetting its beat to zero and subsequently re-establishing its rhythm. The instrument, used correctly and promptly in the event of a heart attack, can save the life of the person concerned.

Its use in the first minutes after the event can increase the chances of survival by 70%!

WHO CAN USE External Semiautomatic Defibrillators?

Law 116/2021 specifies that: "the use of the semiautomatic or automatic defibrillator is also permitted for non-medical healthcare personnel, as well as non-medical personnel who have received specific training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation activities. In the absence of trained medical or non-medical personnel, in cases of suspected cardiac arrest, the use of the semiautomatic or automatic defibrillator is also permitted for those who do not have the required training".

HOW TO USE an Automated External Defibrillator

When you are confronted with a person who has lost consciousness, you must immediately call 112 and follow the operator's instructions, who will tell you what to do and whether it is necessary to use an external semiautomatic defibrillator if there is one in the immediate vicinity.

At the same time, one of those present should be asked to call the freephone number 800 811 192 and alert Sapienza Emergency Services, and another to get a Defibrillator (if necessary) using the instructions available on this page.

Before using a semiautomatic external defibrillator (AED), certain precautions must be taken: first of all, it must be checked that the surface on which it is placed is not wet, as this could result in a leakage of electric current that would be harmful to bystanders, including the rescuer. It is also necessary to check whether the unconscious person is wet: in this case, it will be essential to dry the person's chest before applying the electrodes.

The person using the AED and performing the defibrillation procedure must ensure they are not in contact with the victim during the discharge. They may only return to touch the victim after the AED has sounded the appropriate end-of-procedure signal.

The AED is equipped with step-by-step voice guidance, also in English, and visual cues. It is important to carefully follow the instructions of the semiautomatic defibrillator you are using, but in general, the guidelines are as follows:

  1. Stop the cardiac massage or be replaced in the massage by one of the bystanders
  2. Press the power button to check that the AED is working. Conversely, ask bystanders to get another one
  3. Remove the electrodes
  4. Prepare the patient: Remove clothing from the chest, clean and dry the skin if necessary. Shave off excess hair if necessary and if possible.
  5. Place the electrodes on the patient's skin as indicated on the electrodes themselves or on the AED
  6. Firmly press the adhesive portion of the electrodes
  7. The defibrillator analyses the heart rhythm when the electrodes are connected to the patient. At this stage, the AED will warn that no one should touch the patient.
  8. When the analysis is complete, the AED will communicate visually (flashing lights) or audibly if a shock is required.
  9. When the AED has communicated that it is ready to discharge, have everyone move away from the patient and try not to be in contact with them;
  10. To deliver the shock, as this is a semiautomatic defibrillator, you must press the 'shock' ("scarica") button after ensuring that no one is touching the patient.
  11. The AED will inform youwhen the discharge has been delivered and will indicate whether it is necessary to start the cardiac massage again.
